Unsolved Mysteries
The Case of Mississippi’s Phantom Barber
In the summer of 1942, a nameless assailant broke into several houses to steal hair.
In the summer of 1942 — three years into WWII — a mystery assailant targeted several residents in the small coastal town of Pascagoula, Mississippi as they slept in their beds. However, in the aftermath of each of their “assaults,” none ended up assaulted sexually or brutally murdered; instead, the assailant chopped locks of their hair off as they slept.
Since Pascagoula provided the perfect environment to build warships as WWII carried on, this resulted in the town’s population increases. As a result, the residents of Pascagoula were left on edge even more than usual, that very summer.
The First Cut
On June 5, 1942 — at the Lady of Victories covenant, an unknown individual slit the window screen leading into the room in which two young girls slept. Even though the girls were asleep when the mystery assailant entered, they woke up in time to see whom they described as a man leaving the scene. They described the man as:
“Sorta short, sorta fat and wearing a white sweatshirt.”
