When Traveling Abroad Goes Wrong

An American student goes missing while studying abroad in Italy in 2003. His case remains unsolved.

People love to travel, that’s a given. Whether it’s traveling domestically or internationally, everyone has their reasons for doing it, be it for education, spiritual journeys, or romantic getaways. But as enticing as the idea of traveling to foreign countries as a whole sounds, it’s also essential to keep in mind to be careful and take precautions no matter where you are, and that even the best of events can go wrong.

In one such case, in 2003, 21-year old Matthew Alan Mullaney was attending Fairfield University in Connecticut when a fateful decision to study abroad for a semester in Italy turned into an enduring mystery.

On January 11 of that year, Mullaney traveled to Florence, Italy to study at the Angell Academy of Art for one semester.

Almost a month later, on February 1, Mullaney had gone to The Lion’s Fountain, an Irish pub located in Florence. At 2:30 a.m., he left the pub and was last seen talking to a group of young people near the door. Reportedly, he was not intoxicated when he left the pub.
