Bungo Township, Cass County, Minnesota — On June 11, 1938, young Hickle Ware was playing in a meadow near his family’s farm southwest of Pine River with his older brothers, 13-year-old Richard Jr., and 10-year-old Bob. At some point between noon and 1pm, his brothers briefly left to round up some loose cattle. However, they instructed their younger sibling to stay put until they returned. While they were only away for a short period of time, a few minutes, it unfortunately proved to be a few minutes too long in the end. Once the boys returned, 4-year-old Hickle was nowhere to be seen. Concerned, the boys rushed home and alerted their parents, 35-year-old Richard Sr. and 32-year-old Lois.

For the rest of the afternoon and evening, his family searched for him but found nothing. At first, there was not too much concern, as this wasn’t the first time Hickle had walked away. He had previously wandered off into the nearby forest, but he was always found not far from where he was last seen, sometimes even sleeping. This time, however, it would not be like before.
