Ashes Make the Phoenix Rise

A poem

No one will ever say
that life has been kind to you
abused, orphaned, homeless, forgotten
relegated to the dust bin of existence

You were never given a chance
never given encouragement
never given anything
but still you persist

Because ashes make the phoenix rise
and scar tissue is always stronger
than your original skin
and you know that your story is far from over

You are finally beginning
to come to terms
with what once was
and what can now be

You know that in your heart
that your harrowing journey
has only prepared you
for what will come next

I see you rising and rising
from the wreckage that was once your life
and finally stepping back into the light
from whence you were born

Rise little phoenix! Rise!
And reclaim all that has been taken from you
because all of us are waiting to see
the person you were truly born to be.
