I was waiting

I was waiting for the kids to be old enough
I was waiting to be more financially stable
I was waiting for the right home
I was waiting for the perfect job
I was waiting for the holiday
I was waiting for a break

of some kind

I was waiting for people to understand
I was waiting for the right person to do it with
I was waiting for permission
I was waiting for support
I was waiting for the opportunity to present itself
I was waiting for it to be tied up neatly with a ribbon

in a box

I was waiting to be strong enough
I was waiting to be pretty enough
I was waiting to be confident enough
I was waiting to be successful enough
I was waiting to be mature enough
I was waiting to be respected enough

to be enough

I was waiting to be ready
I was waiting for it to feel right
I was waiting for the time

The perfect time…

Until the world ended
And there was nothing left of what was
None of us
And none of them

For almost fifty years, I waited
Until I found enough regret,
for the time that I had lost,

Waiting

to start living
