Be Proud.

By Danica Roem, Virginia House of Delegates

When Joe Biden called to congratulate me after my victory last November, we spoke about the time we met years before — when I thanked him for raising a man of such character as his son, Beau, who fought furiously for transgender rights as Attorney General of Delaware.

On that day the Vice President grabbed my shoulders, looked me in the eye, and said, “We mean it.”

With this current administration, we don’t have that anymore.

We no longer have a Vice President like Joe Biden, who called transgender rights “the civil rights issue of our time,” and is willing to look a transgender woman in the eyes and tell her that her rights are worth protecting.

We no longer have a President like Barack Obama, who ended discriminatory policies like Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the Defense Of Marriage Act, and who fought hard to put an end to LGBTQ bullying and hate crimes.

That leadership is gone now, but the fight for equality is far from over.

I was elected last November because we wore out the soles of our shoes knocking on doors and having conversations.

It took the same level of energy and commitment that we need right now during Pride Month, and always, to create a culture where we lift each other up, not tear each other down.

Sign up with OFA for the fights ahead this year, and say you’ll keep standing up, speaking out, and being proud.
