Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) announced today that Miriam Weisfeld will serve as the new Director of Artistic Development, effective March 30, 2018. Ms. Weisfeld most recently served in the role of Senior Vice President for Production and Development with The Araca Group in New York City. At Araca, she supported the development of Ayad Akhtar’s Junk and SpongeBob SquarePants on Broadway; the stage adaptation of the 1985 film Clue helmed by Hunter Foster, which premiered at Bucks County Playhouse and will tour later this year; and several other projects in development.

Prior to Araca, Ms. Weisfeld was first the Director of Artistic Development and Dramaturg, and then became the Associate Artistic Director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington DC. At Woolly, she dramaturged the world premieres of Danai Gurira’s EclipsedAnne Washburn’s Mr. Burns: a post-electric play and many more. She conceived and produced Woolly’s 30th anniversary conference on theatre and democracy, which led to the creation of Connectivity: the theatre’s nationally recognized community engagement program. Ms. Weisfeld’s work has also been seen at New York Theatre Workshop, the American Repertory Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, Two River Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Lookingglass Theatre, the Kennedy Center and the Banff Playwrights Colony. She has lectured at Harvard, MIT, Northwestern and the Moscow Art Theatre School. She sits on the Board of Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas and is a contributing author to the Routledge Companion to Dramaturgy.

“I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Miriam to CTC and Minnesota. Her experience, keen insights, intellectual rigor and her passion for the critical mission we serve was evident in the search process,” stated Artistic Director Peter C. Brosius. “Miriam brings not only a wealth of talent for new play development and dramaturgical work, but also a strong knowledge working with playwrights, composers and creative teams. These qualities serve our important vision for creating relevant, challenging and artistically excellent work for today’s multigenerational audiences.”

In her role as the Director of Artistic Development, Ms. Weisfeld will spearhead CTC’s new play development efforts, guiding the development of new plays and musicals from their inception through production. She will be responsible for seeking out playwrights, composers and artists for commission consideration, fostering collaborations between CTC and other regional theatres, commercial and independent producers for co-productions and co-developments, and serving in a dramaturgical role for all productions in the season.

“I’m honored to partner with Peter Brosius and his extraordinary team,” stated Ms. Weisfeld. “The Tony-winning Children’s Theatre Company has earned a national reputation for creating artistically sophisticated productions for multigenerational audiences. The company’s producing model is equally sophisticated: CTC regularly brings shows to New York City and other markets, develops projects with both non-profit and commercial partners and licenses plays for young audiences. This is a moment of tremendous opportunity for CTC, and I can’t wait to collaborate with the company’s artists, staff, supporters, and partners to help expand the reach of Peter’s unique vision.”

Ms. Weisfeld received her MFA in Dramaturgy in 2007 from the American Repertory Theatre/Moscow Art Theatre School Institute at Harvard University and her BFA from York University in Toronto, Canada.
