Question: “How did you guys install all of those machines and the sliding “UNLESS” stump?” — Hudson Middle School 6th Graders

Technical Director Adriane Heflin

Technical Director Adriane Heflin: We make a careful plan for installing all the scenery onstage. We call those days “Load In,” and it’s a busy time onstage! Carpenters, electricians, sound technicians, and painters all work together to make sure everything is put in the right place. For this show, lots of things are hung in the air that fly in, like the trees and the blue fringe curtain. Even more exciting is that many of these elements are curved, which complicate the planning process. We had to make sure we installed everything in the correct order so it wouldn’t get stuck. The small “UNLESS” plinth sits on top of a little hydraulic scissors lift. The lift has a hydraulic cylinder that is controlled by a button backstage. When the operator pushes the button, the lift raises, which raises the plinth that is sitting on top of it. The operator pushes another button to lower it back down.

Question: “How many costumes are made for the show?” — Hudson Middle School 6th Graders

Wardrobe Supervisor Andi Soehren

Wardrobe Supervisor Andi Soehren: There are 95 individual looks in the show.

Many of the costumes were built in London for the original and remount productions, with our costume shop making a few garments and altering all the rest!

Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax ran at Children’s Theatre Company April 15 — June 10, 2018.
