We talked with Artistic Director Peter C. Brosius about this upcoming season and how the shows will educate, challenge, and inspire our audiences. Read below on what he is most excited to share with our audience!

Circus Abyssinia: Ethiopian Dreams

“One of the things I love most about theatre is re-imagining what theatre means, especially on our own stage. And while the Twin Cities is a large hub for circus training and performance, Circus Abyssinia will be the very first circus piece to play on our stage. What I loved most when I saw this piece at the Edinburgh Festival was the pure joy, virtuosity, and expression by these acrobats. Their incredible skill and heroic acts are both extraordinary and deeply human, and we know will leave anyone who sees them in awe.”

Snow White

“We are bringing back one of our favorite playwrights, Greg Banks, who has put together a witty, humorous, and full-of-heart adaptation of Snow White…for two actors, Joy Dolo and Dean Holt! What I love about Greg’s version of this story is that he highlights the very redefinition of family — our Snow White has agency and chooses her new family and freedom over the classic definition of ‘happily ever after.’ It also looks at privilege and choice, narcissism and greed, and ultimately, how kindness, intelligence, and empathy win the day.”

Cinderella

“Between Snow White and Cinderella, we will be looking at that classic notion of the princess — and intentionally flipping it on its head. The Victorian holiday party, the shameless comedy, and songs will be heightened and explored anew and of course, will dazzle with the lavish ballroom scenes that are full of spectacle and wonder for all ages. Cinderella is a character who shows us that we are all more than we seem. If you have seen it before, there will be a lot of new surprises — if you have never seen it, be prepared to be blown away!”

Three Little Birds

“One of the joys of making theatre is that you get to bring an entire world to life on stage. And with Three Little Birds, we get to bring the world of Jamaica alive. Sometimes on a snowy day in Minnesota, there’s nothing more exciting than the idea of a Jamaican world; with its beaches, its birds, animals, its color and life, and its music. Bob Marley’s music is extraordinary because it has united the world around how to create joy, how do we be there for each other, and how to love and support one another.”

Spamtown, USA

“The playwright of this world premiere, Philip Dawkins, spent considerable time in Austin, Minnesota interviewing people about the P-9 worker’s strike that happened there in the 1980s; specifically curious about the perspective of the young people who lived through those events. So through a kid’s point of view, we get to see a national event that began here in Minnesota that still has ripples today. We hope the audience will see how similar these families are to you and sometimes how different they are. This piece is going to start conversations, open hearts, and move you to laughter, and leave you with a deep sense of how families navigate complex situations.”

The Rainbow Fish

“These are stories that challenge us to be our best, our most generous selves, and to understand how we all grow when we are able to reach out to the other and share what is the best part of our selves. This play comes to life with dazzling puppetry and music. Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has created another extraordinary event where the books you love spring to vibrant and magical life.”

Annie

“This piece is filled with humor, intrigue, and at the center is a friendship and love that are profound and moving. What I also love about this piece is seeing how even in the darkest of times, during the Great Depression, that a feeling that anything is possible can still survive and flourish. We can’t wait to share this piece with you because it inspires, delights, and fills us with a powerful sense of joy.”
