A lot of people have asked me about the TimTam Massager after it was recently shown on Joe Rogan’s podcast with Firas Zahabi (GSP MMA coach).

Note: The TimTam is discussed at the start of the clip, so you don’t have to watch the whole three-hour podcast. However, it’s a good listen

I pre-ordered my TimTam back in July 2016 and use it at least weekly. So why did I buy a massager that looks like a power tool and sounds like a vibrator? To make a long answer short ‒ I was in pain.

Hips don’t lie

My hips have bothered me for years. It started as pain that happened occasionally and went away through stretches. It then happened after every training session but a good sleep usually helped. Eventually the pain consisted. Pain shot through my hips and my abductors burned, so I needed ice packs frequently.

I’m a big Firas Zahabi fan. I’ve watched nearly all his videos. I have even read a number of books based on his recommendation (check out my Firas reading list). He always struck me as honest about his supplement sponsors and never says they give you “mad gainz”. In fact, he rarely uses supplements. So when he said he and GSP personally use the TimTam, I immediately bought it.

TimTam product detail

The TimTim comes in a cool carry case. Nothing to assemble, just charge the battery and attach one of the tips. So does it work? Absolutely. If you have sore muscles or hard knots, it loosens them in minutes and the pain goes.

After seeing four physios I was finally diagnosed with labrum tear in both hips which don’t heal by themselves. Two orthopaedic surgeons told me to get surgery. Since then I’ve seen a talented physio and a third orthopaedic surgeon. Although I would love to say the TimTam fixed my hips, the physio exercises ultimately prevented surgery. Yay! But the TimTam kept up my training throughout all this.

I did this comp when I was a white belt and didn’t know I had a tear in both my hips. Though this match ended quickly, I had some tough matches and was in a lot of pain afterwards.

Cost/benefits

Pros:

  • Works well — loosens muscles and relieves pain.
  • Saves time — on foam and lacrosse ball rolling.
  • Saves money — professional massages etc.
  • Quality — a premium product. No signs of wear and tear two years later.
  • Convenient — easy to carry, can take it with you travelling etc.
  • Enhances recovery — I use it straight after weights. More blood flow to the muscle means more nutritional delivery. In theory this should lead to greater recovery. At least that’s what I tell myself.

Cons:

  • Cost ‒ $400 USD.
  • Limited reach ‒ can’t massage your own back.
  • Loud — my family tells me to stop using it when they’re watching TV. And by tell, I mean yell.

Bottom line

You don’t need to be a professional athlete to benefit from the TimTam. You should, however, be SERIOUS in your training. If you’re sore, tight, and wasting time and money on foam rolling and massages, the TimTam’s for you.
