Welcome to Off the Script. This collection comprises writings in prose by playwrights and screenwriters whose distinct voices, craft, and perspectives I admire. When not creating for a theatrical realm, how do these writers view the world around them? What inspires them? Who are their muses? How do they approach their craft? And, what keeps their creative flame alive in a profession that is rife with challenges? Answers to these and other questions will thread through this curated body of work.

You will notice the writers are all women. I spent eleven years of my professional life dedicated to producing and promoting the work of women playwrights and screenwriters, a cause I continue to care deeply about. One might think in a field as progressive as theater, television, or film, we would see gender parity, but the reality is far from that; it’s a fact the media finally seems to be acknowledging. Culture, entertainment in particular, plays a significant role in the way the world perceives women and women perceive themselves. So you can see how problematic the underrepresentation of women’s voices in the creation of culture is. And of course, the same holds true for race and sexual orientation, two other important lenses one could use to filter a collection of work.

I hope you enjoy having a glimpse into the minds and hearts of some wonderful artists, and I encourage you to seek out their scripted work as well!
