【英文謬誤】換會議室別用change a meeting room

和客戶開會，不料隔壁會議室正討論到精彩處，聲音很大，結果Nancy就決定要換會議室: Would you mind us changing a meeting room?

這樣說會讓老外會以為，是要跟某個同事換。

要換地方、換教室、遷店，不能用change而要用move，change是和對方「交換」，我去你那邊，你來我這邊。

The supermarket is changing places with the restaurant.
那間超市跟餐廳對調位置。(The supermarket is moving into the restaurant’s building and the restaurant is moving into the supermarket’s building.)

我們指的「換」算是「移動到其他地方」，所以用move，如：to move to another place/ to move to a new location。

介意我們換一間會議室嗎？這裡太吵了。
Would you mind us moving to another meeting room? It’s too loud here.

我們有辦法換到其他地方嗎？
Is there any way we can move to another place?

「搬家」怎麼搬？

生活中的move，最能聯想的應該就是「搬家」了，那用英文說應該很容易吧？

我下禮拜要搬家
（X）I plan to move house next week.
（O）I plan to move next week.

Moving house讓人困惑

你一定會疑惑為什麼不能英文的搬家，不把home或house說出來，「搬家」在中文得說清清楚楚，但英文move house有兩種可能：

1.你是在做搬家公司生意（house moving business），你在幫客戶move house，所以搬家人員的英文就叫做mover。

2.你在房地產領域工作，move house其實是sell house賣房子。

公司搬遷

搬家、調動，除了move，還可以用一個漂亮的字relocate搬遷、重新安置，relocate這個字是re（再次）加上locate這個動詞，locate是坐落、位於…，也有找到的意思。

We relocated to Brazil in 2008.
我們2008年搬到了巴西。

My company relocated me to Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam.
公司把我調到越南的胡志明市。

如果是開公司，第一次要找地點，relocate就不適合，直接用locate當動詞。Our company will locate in its new office by March.
公司會在三月以前搬進新辦公室。
