HP printers and cartridges green credentials

We know that most companies today are making efforts to go green as a matter of corporate social responsibility, and in many instances this has the added bonus of lowering manufacturing costs. HP is no different, especially after having bagged the honour of being the UK’s No. 1 printer brand. The following numbers tell the story of how HP strives to reduce their environmental impact:

  • 2 billion cartridges. The number of ink and toner cartridges the company has made using recyclable content over the last 7 years.
  • 300 football pitches. Had HP not removed polythene bags from the packaging for HP Photosmart and Deskjet printers in 2010, these would have created enough plastic to cover this number of football pitches. Fancy playing in a plastic-covered pitch? No? I thought so.
  • 566 million cartridges. The number of HP ink and toner cartridges kept out of landfills since 1991.
  • 2. 5 billion bottles. The number of postconsumer plastic bottles used to manufacture new HP ink cartridges since 1995.
  • 2 billion ink and toner cartridges. The number of original HP ink and toner cartridges manufactured with recycled content.
  • 1.1 million pounds. The recycled hangers incorporated into the company’s most recent expansion of the recycling process.
  • 75 per cent of ink cartridges and 24 per cent of toner cartridges. The number of cartridges now manufactured using “closed loop” recycled plastic. This resulted to a 50 per cent increase in the use of recyclable plastic for HP products.
  • 1.3 million Tonnes. The carbon dioxide equivalent emissions avoided by HP monochrome LaserJet printers in 2009 through its Instant-on Technology. This is equivalent to removing 240,000 cars off the road for one year.

The environmental impact reduction of HP toners and cartridges is made possible primarily through its “closed loop” recycling procedure involving the usage of postconsumer recycled plastic bottles to manufacture new ink cartridges, reducing the need for virgin plastic materials during production.

HP printers also reduce energy usage and its resulting carbon emissions through its industry pioneering auto-on/auto-off and Instant-on Technology. The auto-on feature uses the printer’s full power just when someone clearly intends to use it as when a print job is queued, the power button is switched on or a paper tray is opened. Once the printer has been idle for a specified time period, the auto-off function takes over. The Instant-on Technology uses a quick-heating fuser system that warms rapidly and cools quickly. These features are proof that technological innovations can be used not only to create power tools and super gadgets, but also limit the damage done to the environment.
