Which type of printer is best for you?

--

There’s a wide array, but which one will suit you?

Inkjet Printers

Inkjet printers are the most commonly found type of printer in homes and offices, because they’re cheap to buy with reasonable print speed and high quality ink. Inkjets are also popular because they can print onto many different types of paper and there’s almost no warm-up time.

Inkjet printers are particularly good for colours and image printing. They’re accurate and inkjet ink has fantastic depth. Inkjet printers are also the smallest type of printer you can buy — laser printers and all-in-one printers tend to be bulkier. Inkjet cartridges can also be refilled, however you should be aware that inkjet ink is more expensive than champagne. So the running costs are quite high.

Aside from the ink costs, inkjets are a good choice. A good inkjet printer should:

  • Print reasonably quickly
  • Handle colours and images well
  • Have some form of ink deal to keep costs down

Laser Printers

If you print a lot and value speed above all else, then a laser printer will suit your needs. Laser printers are more expensive than inkjet printers because they’re faster and in recent times they have advanced to a point where they produce comparable or better print quality, too.

Laser printers are particularly good for text documents. They print laser-sharp black text and handle small fonts and fine lines better than inkjet printers. The downsides to laser printers are that a) they can be expensive and b) they can be bulky. Laser printers also boot slower than inkjet printers, because they need time to warm up. If you keep your printer running this won’t be an issue though.

Overall, laser is better than inkjet for text. A good laser printer should:

  • Print incredibly fast
  • Product pin-sharp text and fonts
  • Have reasonable ink costs

All-In-One Printers

If you want to print, copy, and scan without multiple machines, then an all-in-one printer sounds like the perfect machine for you. All-in-one printers, or multifunction printers, come in inkjet or laser form, but inkjet all-in-ones are the most popular because they cost less.

While all-in-one printers can carry out a wide variety of functions, they do struggle to produce the quality of individual machines, such as standalone printers, copiers, and scanners. This is because the vast majority of multifunction printers are built to be cost-effective, and so only ‘passable’ tech is used in the making of them, rather than the state-of-the-art technology that can be found in laser printers.

But, they’re still a solid solution for small offices. A good all-in-one should:

  • Produce a consistent print, copy, and scan quality
  • Offer a good print speed, such as six or seven black and white pages per minute
  • Have reasonable ink costs
