Let those ‘boring’ office supplies on your desk tickle your imagination and unleash your creativity

As you sit on your chair half-asleep in one of those boring office days, let your mind wander a bit and leave a note to the bosses: according to a CNN article, daydreaming boosts both creativity and productivity. Don’t you just love it when scientists actually support those off-the-rulebook things we do in our everyday lives?

Couple this daydreaming in an office setting with appreciation for the Transformers movies and what do you know? Your computer, printer and copier all dismantle themselves and team up with the items lying around your office desk to form a robot with a spent cartridge for its eyes, a foldback clip for its nose and a mouth with a mean-looking pair of fangs from a staple remover? Okay, maybe not the best idea for a robot face, but you get the drift.

To be able to make this possible, you have to take a second — and longer — look at an item and not see it for the role it’s played in your office life thus far. Fancy seeing shiny brass head pins not for holding down a piece of paper on the wall but as space ships of invading aliens when you put a bunch of them on the table upside down? How about having a bar of staples as the bridge to an undiscovered world (e.g. a crack in the wall)?

The possibilities are endless as much as your imagination allows, but do make sure that at the end of the day you’ve accomplished your assigned tasks…or risk having an angry boss looking over your shoulder wondering what on earth his staff is doing making weird “battle” noises and having office supplies strewn about?

When you finally turn your back and look him in the eye, just say how the CNN article made you realise you want to be more focused and creative at work, before politely excusing yourself to go back to your keyboard, monitor and mouse.
