Offline Camp California is about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles close to the small town of Santa Margarita. This meant that campers had a long drive before arriving here at the ranch on Friday evening. After dodging tarantulas in the driveway, everyone arrived safely and settled in for a long weekend of fun and conversation. Some stayed up late by the campfire or wandered around the ranch to view the amazing night sky.

The first full day of Offline Camp California started on Saturday with Yoga for Engineers lead by our yoga instructor Marylou Lenhart. After getting some breakfast, campers gathered for the day’s standup where we formally welcomed campers and introduced ourselves. It was a great opportunity to learn a little bit about each other and what brought us each here to Offline Camp California.

We then proposed and voted on the day’s unconference sessions. Campers could read a printed version of the Medium session recaps from Offline Camp Catskills, which helped inform this weekend’s discussions. One of our previous campers even provided us with a nicely formatted set of design principles which came out of conversations at Offline Camp Catskills.

The first full day included five sessions broken out across two time slots:

  • Supporting Offline Users: What happens when it breaks?
  • Offline First to Save the World
  • Replication and Sync Explained
  • Design Principles
  • Storing Sensitive Data Offline

Each breakout session group took notes and summarized their discussions back to the larger group. After lunch we gathered for passion talks from several campers on a diverse range of topics. Look for session recap posts and videos of the passions talks in the coming days and weeks!

We celebrated the close of first full day with a hayride up to a lovely spot with a panoramic view of the sunset. After the hayride the evening continued with dinner, a campfire, and some bread making. As we hit “publish” on this post the second full day of Offline Camp California begins!
