Today, we commemorate World Environment Day.
Environmental issues have been a part of our history since the earliest of civilizations. History books and school curricula often fail to include the details of such problems and would rather focus on political and socio-economic conflicts throughout the course of time. However, the environment plays a vital role in the progression of our species. Without proper surroundings to live in, human beings cannot survive long enough to evolve. Issues such as deforestation and natural resource depletion are among the many historical environmental issues that are most prevalent throughout the course of history, and most definitely continue to this day.
It should be noted that social and environmental injustices are collectively rooted from the same cause — inhumane actions. Our ignorance, lack of discipline, and utter disregard for the solemnity of life is what makes the world seem so unbearable. If we continue to carry out these inhumane acts towards each other and our surroundings, the human race will continue to disassemble until there is nothing left but ugly selfishness in this world.
In light of all the social phenomena that has rattled up the world, we should keep in mind that humanity is not the only construct that seems to be falling apart during these times, but the environment as well. Society continues to face graver circumstances with each passing day. Injustice and inequality are more prevalent than ever, and Covid-19 persists to thrive in numerous countries around the globe. The pandemic was never the solution to our environmental issues, but it showcased the true capabilities of our society today. We need to act upon these mistakes while we still can. We must decide to change, for the good of the future.
