Why I’m No Longer Participating in NaNoWriMo

I recently completed The Poetry (Half) Marathon and wrote 12 poems in 12 hours. My half marathon went from 9 AM to 9 PM on Saturday, June 15th, 2024.

A certificate that reads “This certifies that Nia McLeod successfully completed the 2024 Half Marathon and wrote 12 poems in 12 hours”

I finished the challenge on a day perfect for poem writing: a post-protective style wash day.

I had my cornrows in for a month. They were frizzy, dirty, and dusty–screaming to be taken out. I spent about 8 hours taking down my cornrows, detangling my hair, washing my hair, and putting it into chunky twists for a twist-out I wanted to wear days later.

In between the finger detangling and old episodes of Behind the Music, I was writing poems.
