In the Oh, Write series Writing Prompts, I’m creating writing prompts inspired by modern TV shows, movies, and songs. Along the way, I’m providing a mini-review documenting what makes each piece special and how it inspires me — hopefully inspiring you.

Music has always been my #1 inspiration to write. When I used to write fanfiction, I named my stories after songs (i.e. Wale’s “Diary” and Gym Class Heroes’ “Stereo Hearts”)

Songfics were my bread and butter. I got to listen to my favorite songs over and over again while writing about my favorite celebrities — win win! I also frequently produced songfic one-shots for other people — cranking them out like I was a Black 15-year-old version of Nora Roberts.

Leon Bridges and Lucky Daye’s “All About You” is the latest song that’s got me itching to write. From the melodies to its twangy guitar, I’m in love with the track. But, best of all, the song is angsty at its core.

I love writing about complex emotions, especially within romance. “All About You” fits into that subgenre perfectly. I’m channeling my teenage angst into a songfic about “All About You” — my first in many years. With Leon Bridges and Lucky Daye crooning in the background, it’s so fun to write.

Check out the music video below. It’s one of the coolest quarantine-era videos I’ve ever seen:

Writing Prompt: Write a songfic (a piece based around or inspired by a song). Consider including song lyrics within the piece — whether it’s hidden imagery or a character jamming out in their room.

If you use this prompt, tag me in the story. I’d love to read what you come up with.

What TV show, movie, or song should I write a writing prompt about next? Let me know in the comments section below.
