Truth is wrongfully perceived as certainty. This is the greatest and the most common misconception that has eluded even the greatest minds in all of history. The nature of truth has caused a myriad of problems and has imprisoned many both mentally and physically. Early philosophers asserted that no knowledge is certain. so why do we perceive and equate truth as certainty? Also early philosophers opined that truth is relative, so once again why do we perceive truth as certainty ?
Ideally truth is a fact or a collection of facts that are real, genuine and not false. However, in reality what constitutes truth is not necessarily the above definition. In the real world the construct of truth is dogmatic and orthodox. Adolf Hitler is obviously remembered for the inhumane reputation, but he left us with something good, a concise and incontestable definition of truth “truth is consistency” . This simple statement defines what truth is in today’s world. Everything you know to be true is as a result of consistency and not certainty. People believed that the sun revolved around the earth as true not because they where certain of the knowledge but because it was widely accepted at the time and the facts backing the believe was consistent with the general believe at that time. Later on a more consistent theory came up that had facts which could explain why we have day and night, seasons and other astronomical Observations. After initial opposition and suppression, it was later adopted and there was a paradigm shift. The same scenario happen with the gravitational force, the structure of the atom and so many other
Theories and schools of thought. We believe that something is true as long as it is consistent and has some correlation with some preconceived knowledge or fact. Mostly we believe something is true if we are been told over and over that it is true and is certain. Truth is dogmatic and orthodox in reality, but it is usually perceived as certain and absolute. So to get a vivid picture of truth we should perceive it as merely a collection of consistent facts with a touch of dogmatism and orthodoxy.
