🎼 “I am a renegade / I never been afraid / Fresh and I’m gettin’ paid / The future of this age” 🎵

Hello hello! So glad you chose to join us again this week in the ONJU Study Hall! I always look forward to our time together revisiting the discussions we have in our ONJU Saturday Twitter Space. Joining me for this discussion is Janine, our Ohnahji University Communication Major. Since our most recent Space surrounded communication, she popped out to share her notes with us on the topic.

This Space took place live on 3/18/23 @ 12n PST and was hosted by project Dev & co-founder Ohnahji B, co-hosted by your Dean of Communication BOSS and ONJU Faculty EyeSeeThru! He’s not gonna like me to say this, but EyeSeeThru was involved in much of the conversation during this Space, so I’m calling it his debut as our AI subject matter expert! I’m glad he came up to share his expansive knowledge of AI processes and tools that many of the fam only see in group chats or on the Ohnahji U campus! 🎓

THE OHNAHJI FAM CONTINUES TO THRIVE

Since our inception as Ohnahji University, its been an initiative of ours to teach emerging tech — Blockchain, smart contracts, DeFi, AI — whatever the home team needs to excel in this new Space.

The NFT convention season has been in full swing lately. ETH Denver was the most recent conference a few weeks ago, and Outer Edge LA is kicking off shortly. Formerly known as NFTLA, Outer Edge LA is a four-day event encompassing Web3 and NFTs with workshops, lectures, and performances. In addition, most larger conferences have satellite events put together by smaller organizations, and ONJU Chancellor Ohnahji B is excited to attend a few of those himself.

This past Wednesday, he attended the K12 Crypto summit, where youth from the area could learn about crypto, NFTs, and blockchain—big shoutout to organizers and contributors Jay Rich & Principal Rahh. Check B’s recap thread below. He will also be with the Jaydn Violet and UVR crew at Ultra Violet Rave later in the week.

Ohnahji fam GisForGreat had a networking event the following day and even spoke earlier last week in a Fireside Chat during the K12 Crypto Summit.

V5 HAS COME ALIVE!!!

The biggest news this week has been the release of Midjourney version 5. Text-to-image generator Midjourney is one of the more user-friendly resources artists use to create stunning images for art and many other uses. The most notable jump in this version has been the realism now found in details like hands, faces, and environments that can nearly rival non-AI work.

Version 4 is still supported (as are all the previous versions of Midjourney) for the prompters who are still looking for more abstract, painterly effects, but if you’re looking for realism, version 5 is the place to be! EyeSeeThru emphasizes that this current iteration of V5 is only the beginning, the “vanilla” version he calls it; tweaks will come in the future, and most changes will be seen in real-time. So take your time and be patient, as much of the building will be a progression, and what works today will be refined tomorrow, as well as what is generated in the output.

If you’re interested in learning the ins and outs of tools like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, check out the #pixel-poets and #ai-gpt social clubs! Found in the Ohnahji U Discord, both channels have become quite the library for tools and learning with the fam. The Midjourney bot is in the ‘cord too, as is the BlueWillow bot, a similar image-generation tool. Tap in and explore — access to some of the info requires you to hold an Ohnahji token, but since we’re still minting a .01ETH, the purchase will surely pay for itself in the wealth of information you’ll receive in return!

GPT4 BREAKS DOWN THE DOOR!!!

Continuing the AI news, OpenAi’s ChatGPT4 has just gone live! As stated earlier, what’s present is an Alpha version, the full suite of features has yet to be released, but if this new version is anywhere close to what is present in the full release, get ready for the innovative tool to change everything!

Before diving into all this, a word from EyeSeeThru:

“I just want everybody to kinda chill out for just a second. Like, breathe, take a breath. There’s a lot coming at us with this technology. Whether it be the visual art side of it, there’s music, there’s GPT. Just take a breath. Don’t feel like you gotta touch all of it at the same time and keep up with it. Don’t feel overwhelmed by it because I know some people are trying to keep up with the advances and they feel like they can’t.”

OpenAI’s ChatGPT4 is an upgrade to ChatGPT 3, first released in November 2022. It first made headlines when it reached 100 million active users just two months after its launch.

ChatGPT is an advanced computer algorithm that can analyze data quickly. The data from a vast compiled text dataset allows the algorithm to query it. When you ask it a question, the data is combed, the answer is compiled based on what you requested, and it is then given to you.

To do this, the model was made conversational. It was also given human speech data to recognize how humans talk to each other and deliver an answer in the same way. Experts are creating models like ChatGPT to bridge computer language into human language so that we can comprehend them in the best way for us. With it, users who have yet to gain experience in skills like technical writing or coding can present their ideas to a computer in plain language and receive the information they need to execute them.

Essentially, it’s all communication.

The difference between previous tools and the current ones has been exponential. The dataset entries ChatGPT3 used to pull from compared to GPT4 has been an enormous jump, from 170 billion entries to 170 trillion entries, but EST has other thoughts about that number. Though it’s significant, he shares that it’s not a numbers game; the tool’s value isn’t really in that statistic. Additionally, the input field on the tool grew from 3000 characters to 25000, and the output field is even more significant, allowing users to request and receive more information than before.

Questions

Why should people learn about this?

ChatGPT is an invaluable tool that people should use as a learning resource. Look at it as similar to Google, except that GPT can give you MORE than what Google can provide you.

How is GPT different from Google?

With Google, there is a clear prioritization of what they want you to see when using the search engine. GPT has none of that, allowing users to dive deeper into finding information in a contained environment without pretense.

AI TOOLS, TIPS, & TRICKS GALORE

To assist those still unsure of how artificial intelligence tools can be used to ease their everyday workflow, a few use cases and hacks were shared, as well as some things to keep in mind.

Use Cases

Art: Many artists use the chatbot to describe images and input those prompts into generators like Dall-e and Midjourney. As the current ChatGPT model is unfamiliar with Midjourney, EyeSeeThru recommends giving it an idea of what you want a Midjourney prompt to be. With that, it uses hallucination to satisfy your request by crafting its answer to what it thinks you will be satisfied with. Keep that in mind when working with the tool.

Writing: The language model can take a passage of writing and summarize it for you or help structure ideas for an outline. OpenAi’s WhisperGPT technology recognizes speech (and can even distinguish non-English speech) and transcribe it into text.

Hacks

  • Take any prompt that has previously netted you a sound output, change the variables within it, and find what works to create your desired outcome.
  • Copy and paste industry requirements or a job listing into ChatGPT, and ask it to create a resume and cover letter for you.
  • Input smart contract code to find security vulnerabilities and holes in the code. You can then ask GPT to help you write better code to eliminate those vulnerabilities.
  • Ask it to help you better your work efficiency by allowing you to automate tasks. Give it parameters (ex. “How can I backup the emails I send from my Outlook email inbox to a text document in my Google Drive?”) and ask how it can make your workflow easier.
  • Use character prompting to refine your answer outputs: Ask GPT to respond as if it were a specific person (like a Senior Level Marketing exec with 20 years of experience who leads various successful campaigns or an Art Curator who has built successful collections for Sotheby’s.) Given what you’re asking, providing the language model with constraints allows it to craft outputs in the way that said character would. You’re asking it to use hallucination, a tool it’s already familiar with, to pretend it is the character to give you the answer you’re looking for.
  • For the AI art addicts: take your Midjourney version 4 prompts and ask GPT to convert it to a more conversational language that better fits version 5 parameters — you’re welcome 😉
  • Get the kids involved! Ohnahji B made it a point to mention that because kids’ brains work differently than adults, they connect the dots in ways we don’t often think of. Show the youth how to use the tools safely and take note of how they specify and adapt the language they use to craft the output they’re looking for!

A Word on Hallucination

Circling back to hallucination and how ChatGPT often makes up a scenario to give you the answer you’re looking for, you must proofread and double-check the information in your output in its entirety. Its outputs are a byproduct of the creativity it uses. In that way, the same imagination it uses to craft a poem is the same imagination used to fill in the information gaps a dataset couldn’t.

The Ohnahji University Communications Lab private workroom is equipped to fulfill all your prompting needs! (created in Midjourney V5. Prompt: afrofuturistic collegiate communication lab::5 audio and recording equipment on desk::5 pink gold color scheme::5 — ar 16:9, then blended with an existing ONJU collegiate output from V3)

LOOKING AHEAD TO WHAT’S IN STORE

ChatGPT is both a library and a librarian. It’s talking to the totality of human information, pulling from that data, and giving you a response. It’s not a human and looking at it as such limits the scope of the work you can achieve. The language we talk to a human in front of us is very different from how we speak to an inanimate object like ChatGPT — this tool can give you things humans cannot!

Instead of being a consumer product, this innovation came as something open source that people use to transform everything around them. So in speaking about how fast it’s being adopted and used, it’s simply a matter of everyone figuring out how comfortable they are with using it.

Many people fear the changes and how fast they’re coming, but changes on a macro scale aren’t as fast as on a micro scale. Many more minor innovations will ease our comfort as we move into larger wholesale ones.

Emerging Tech for Emerging Markets

As discussed in our previous Space, ChatGPT technology has been rolled into the Bing search engine and now the Microsoft Office suite. With the advent of its release, it is poised to become one of the most affordable tools on the market and will provide access to over a billion users.

Ohnahji B shared a quote:

“Nothing has ever happened like this before. We’re all spinning to get our heads around what this means for literally everything. The disruption to knowledge workers is the other imagination, what EyeSeeThru was talking about, both in ways that are good in productivity and bad for some people, less jobs. We’ve had shifts like this that have happened before you know? There’s no horse and buggy repair shops that are open anymore. But in this instance, with this AI and these learning language models, the opportunities it offers by leveling the playing field for poor countries is a systemic shock.”

Upon hearing this quote, I shared that I hope others won’t use having the knowledge of this tech against emerging societies in ways that take advantage of those who don’t have the information.

Speaker Digital Railroad compares it to the early days of Bitcoin. When looking at early adopters who knew about peer-to-peer transactions, those people are sitting pretty now. But, giving the example of the man who bought a pizza with Bitcoin in early 2010, we’re in the middle of a new change, and like-minded people can use it the right way, advance along with it, and bring our families in too.

Ohnahji B believes that when people are moving on something new and trying to take advantage and monetize with it, it is the perfect time to jump in, work and learn to help others use it in the right ways.

EyeSeeThru “makes the line clear” by saying that learning the tech is different from using the tool. They are separate lanes. Find the route you are most interested in and dive into it that way. There is no one way to engage the technology; if you want to get deeper, find what’s comfortable to you, and that’s where your lane will be. So much of the innovation we see now is happening because users are taking advantage of them. Five months from now, we may not even be interfacing with the technology similarly.

I’m biased, but there was so much information in this space that I don’t hear often presented; see why we love us some EyeSeeThru?! To keep up with the news he shares and the art he shows, make sure you follow the guru!

I’ll see you in the next Ohnahji U space! We have Ohnahji U Saturday with the fam on Saturdays around noon PST and The Commons on Wednesday evenings around 7 pm CST. If you don’t catch us there, find us on Twitter, on campus, or wherever you see that ONJU pink, gold, and black!

No AI here — just 🔥 work from @_ebv 😉
