Week Eleven Recap
University of Tulsa
Navy 42 — Tulsa 40
The two conference losses for Tulsa have literally come down to inches. On a fourth and one, the Golden Hurricane (7–3, 4–2) defense appeared to have stripped Navy (7–2, 5–1) quarterback Will Worth just before the officials blew the play dead. The ball was awarded to the Midshipmen, however, and a first down awarded, allowed them to run out the clock.
Dane Evans, who finished 16–27 for 369 yards, tossed a 74 yard pass to Keevan Lucas to tie the game at 7, in the first; but it was a game of catch-up for most of the game. It seemed as though the Navy defense was willing to make Evans beat them, loading the box and holding Tulsa’s talented backfield to 207 yards. This coming a week after running for 342 yards against East Carolina.
James Flanders rushed for 89 yards, while D’Angelo Brewer rushed for 81, joining Flanders in the 1,000 yard club for the season. Will Worth led the way for Navy, rushing for 122 yards and three touchdowns. It was Worth’s fifth straight 100-yard game.
Game Ball
Dane Evans became the all-time leading passer in Tulsa history, continuing a greta career for the fifth-year senior. Evans passed for four touchdowns, giving him 18 on the season. He also rushed for a touchdown, in a key fourth quarter score.
University of Oklahoma
Oklahoma 45 — Baylor 24
Oklahoma won their seventh straight game and firmly control their own destiny in the Big 12 Conference title chase. Baker Mayfield threw for 300 yards and had three total touchdowns, while Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine returned to the backfield, each going over the century mark.
The Oklahoma (8–2, 7–0) defense forced three Baylor turnovers, picking off Seth Russell twice and forcing one fumble. Russell left the game with a dislocated ankle in the third quarter, with the Sooners firmly in the lead. Baylor (6–3, 3–3) lost its third straight game, going 10–22 on third down conversions.
Mixon finished with 187 total yards and a touchdown, while Perine scored two touchdowns and had 100 yards rushing in his return from injury. Dede Westbrook continued to find the endzone as well, catching two touchdowns and finishing with 88 yards.
Game Ball
Linebacker Jordan Evans had himself a day. Evans picked off Russell twice, recorded nine tackles and two sacks. Although the Sooner defense has been maligned this season, Evans has been a mainstay.
Oklahoma State University
Oklahoma State 45 — Texas Tech 44
Two straight games, two straight nail-biters. Texas Tech missed a game-tying extra point with 1:44 remaining, helping secure Oklahoma State’s sixth consecutive win. The Cowboys (8–2, 6–1) remain in the hunt for a Big 12 title, holding on after having a ten point lead early in the fourth.
Mason Rudolph paced the Cowboy attack, passing for 395 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a score in the first quarter. The Red Raiders (4–6, 2–5) appeared content to play the safeties tight, allowing James Washington to score on an 82 yard reception, one play after Tech pulled to within three points. Washington finished with two touchdowns and 158 yards receiving.
Texas Tech gained 518 yards to Oklahoma State’s 605, but the Cowboy defense made Tech work for everything. Patrick Mahomes, the nation’s leading passer, finished with 344 yards and three touchdowns, but it took 51 passes to get there.
Game Ball
Justice Hill rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown, surpassing the century mark for the fourth time this season. He now holds the freshman record for 100 yard games, surpassing names such as Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, Kendall Hunter and Joseph Randall.
