Lucille Ball casts a giant shadow over 20th century television. She refused to be pigeonholed. Her fingerprints are all over the 21st century, too. She was the studio head brave enough to gamble on Gene Roddenberry’s very expensive vision of the future, Star Trek. Few can argue that Star Trek is one of the most influential television shows ever made. It influenced so many young scientists and engineers, they literally worked to make the world we have today. It is too bad the social scientists and politicians were not similarly inspired.

Lucille Ball is a personal hero of mine. It is not just because she sponsored Gene Roddenberry and brought Star Trek to the world. Frankly, that would be enough probably, but she is such a complicated person. She overcomes a lot of obstacles to live the life she does. It is an authentic life with much of it played out on screens, big and small. The life of Lucille Ball is history and her movies document it.

Five Came Back is the first one here. Twelve people are aboard an airplane on the way to South America when it encounters a storm and is blown off course. The plane ends up crashing into jungle known to be inhabited by head hunters. The two pilots attempt to fix the engines and take off before hostile natives or lack of food overcome them. The situation brings out the best and worst in the stranded dozen.
