Brittain Ashford premieres the music video for “I Could Have Danced All Night” on Medium. The song is from Ashford’s new album, entitled Drama Club, a collection of bespoke versions of show tunes from Grease, Annie, Hamilton, My Fair Lady, and Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812.

Originally from Seattle, singer-songwriter and actress Brittain Ashford later moved to New York, marking the beginning of her focused commitment to music. Releasing two albums with her band, Prairie Empire, Ashford starred in Broadway’s Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812 and toured the U.S. in Dave Malloy’s Ghost Quartet, singing, as well as playing keyboards, autoharp, and percussion.

On Drama Club, Ashford takes songs from well-known musicals, “songs that people think are unlistenable and making them… listenable.” Ashford accomplishes her sonic sorcery by peeling away the harmonic frills, thus reducing each song to its emotional essence. Her marvelous post-trip-hop rendering of “I Could Have Danced All Night” subverts the song’s familiarity, investing it with innovative, modern flavors.
