Creating 3d Sketchup models has been a fun way play with the house design. The floor plans give a sense of how practical things are but it’s difficult to get a feel for the place.

V-ray is a ray tracing rendering engine with a plugin for Sketchup. It makes it easy to create some pretty realistic renders. V-ray will simulate sunlight for different seasons as well as artificial lights. You can add materials, colours and textures. For transparent materials you can even set the transparency, reflection and refraction.
