Just because Olimpico Learning has virtual learning this year does not mean the students are having any less fun! This week, students participated in various demonstrations and mini arts and crafts activities as a part of the Chefology unit.

On Tuesday, teacher Maya led a demonstration using water and flour to teach her 4th and 5th-grade class about the importance of following a recipe. In 3 different bowls, Maya mixes together different amounts of water and flour to help students determine which combination would be the best consistency for making bread. In the following discussion, they learn about the use of yeast. “What happens when you add a lot of yeast and just a little bit of flour?” one student asked.

Afterward, students were asked to create their own recipes for some of their favorite foods. Turns out they are big fans of crepes and pizza!

On Wednesday in the 1st through 3rd grade class, students learned about germs and why it is important to wash their hands before eating. In this activity, students were able to express their creativity by shaping some modeling clay into what they thought germs could look like. “I want you to make it really big, make it have legs!” teacher Aoife Hernon said. Here they are seen showing off their finished products.

After a fun morning of hands-on activities and teacher demonstrations, students leave class filled with new knowledge and excited for more. Next week we will be entering the biology unit, where students will learn about plants, animals, and how they survive.
