Get $1,000 — $2,000 Back From Your Tax Refund? Here’s 10 Fun Things to Do
In my opening Manifesto, I talked about getting more out of life with your money. While other financial blogs like talking about 401ks and mutual funds, I know better, most millennials don’t have the time or money for that.
All of it falls on deaf ears.
If there were ways to stretch your dollars while also enjoying life, I believe millennials would get on board.
Most millennials when they get their refund, they see it as “free money.” It’s what I always thought. Actually, it’s just extra money you gave the government, much like a 0% interest savings account (probably negative interest due to inflation), but what it means is you can spend it how you wish.
Obviously, if you are scratching to make ends meet right now, you might need to dump your refund into your checking account to make rent. But, what if you have a little breathing room. Perhaps, you could put a fraction of it to debt, but the rest, spend on an experience you’ll remember.
Consumerism Commentary had a fun piece about 10 ways to use your $1k-$2k refund (rather than put it in savings etc.)
1. Take a Road Trip:
Grab some friends, hit some cheap motels and make a week out of it. Eat really cheap and you might have some $$$ leftover!
2. Pimp your Ride:
Only, if you plan to keep your car a while, but if you’re commuting a bunch for work, hey, splurge a bit.
3. Get on Television:
Tip the producers to play Hospital Patient #3 in a TV episode. It’s on my bucket list!
4. Emulate your Hero:
Go to the bank, get some $1’s, and dance around in them. Record it and put it on Youtube. Maybe it’ll go viral! Send it to me when it does.
5. Invest in your Favorite Hobby:
6. Attend a Big Sporting Event:
Go crazy and hit up a game you’ve been waiting to go your whole life!
7. Get a Makeover:
The works!
8. Upgrade your Gadgets:
There’s new, cool stuff for your phone all the time, enjoy tinkering.
9. Treat your Friends:
Imagine the damage you can do with your friends with $2,000….
10. Of course….Vegas, baby!:
Stay away from Roulette!
Some of these are a bit *tongue in cheek* but fun nonetheless. Point is, sometimes your mind and body just need to relax. You’re in your prime years right now, when you’re the fittest, healthiest (hopefully) than you may be when you’re older. I’m working on dropping some poundage right now, I’m only going to be this young once!
Take time for yourself and for your friends. All the memories I have in the past are with friends and family. We’re doing fun things. Me at the kitchen table trying to make a dollar out of $0.15 isn’t what I remember. Of course, try and stay within the boundaries of what your refund is (no point in sinking into debt with your splurge), but I believe memories are what make a great life worth living!
Live it up a bit!
What are you splurging on this year with your tax refund?
