A+ for jobs during school. On-campus and off-campus.

Many schools have great paid positions for students willing to apply- here’s your chance to be a teaching assistant, work at the admissions office, work support at the computer center, or work as a resident advisor of a dormitory.

Off-campus jobs opportunities have also risen due to the internet and the on-demand economy.

Tip a toe into work life, and research these additional benefits:

  1. Tax credits and deductions from Uncle Sam. Don’t miss the recent one for MBAs.
  2. Expense defrayment. Work-study jobs are available to undergraduates and graduates and can be written directly into your financial aid package and cut down on your education expenses. Apply early, as these positions are coveted and limited.
  3. Free meal plans, or free dormitory housing. Some of the best jobs are ones for upper classmen or graduate students willing to be Resident Advisors at a dormitory. If you land one of these gigs- it could mean free room and board, a meal plan, and even a stipend!
  4. Getting the hang of work place politics in a low-stakes way. For many roles, you’ll have regular meetings with bosses and colleagues. You’ll get performance reviews, promotions, and pay increases. Learn in a low-stakes environment how the workplace works!
  5. Getting to know future employers. Many employers offer externships, internships, and part-time work to exceptional students. This is a great way to test out a future employer and decide whether it is the right full-time company for you.
  6. Leadership. Missing the “Experience & Leadership” section on your resume? Fill it in with your campus job. Honors and titles also look great here!
  7. Graduating with less debt. Once you graduate, not only do you continue to accrue interest on the loan principal you borrowed, but your repayment plan starts (with penalties for missed payments) and interest owed often times starts being capitalized (meaning your loan principal grows). Give yourself a head start by repaying your loans while you’re in school!
  8. Gain a professional network. Often times students cluster around greek life, sports, or classroom majors. Why not spend quality time with people that have similar career goals as you? These connections may prove to be more valuable over time, since your classmate can speak directly about what it’s like to work with you.
  9. Work on a F-1 Visa. International students on a student visa are allowed to work educationally affiliated jobs during school. The requirements need to be followed carefully and can be found here.
  10. Teach others to teach yourself. Tutoring is never going to sound as glamorous when you’re actually done with school. And countless studies show that by teaching others you gain a better understanding of the material. The good thing about these gigs it that all the credentials you need mastery over that particular test or that particular subject! Check on-campus listings, large test prep companies, and online tutoring platforms!
