Olyseum Update–23.04.2020

Dear Olyseum community,

First of all, we want to give you a message of support on these harsh times, wishing that you all are safe and keep healthy with your loved ones.

The coronavirus situation

As you all know, the world is in a special emergency situation caused by COVID-19 with more than 2.4 million confirmed cases, 169k deaths worldwide and countries applying emergency lockdowns to their citizens to slow down the spread of the virus trying to flatten the curve and reduce the overload of health services.

Many lives and business are being severely affected and it is a global priority to solve the situation, in search of a vaccine that we hope will arrive within the next 18 months. The social and economic impact has accelerated change in the way we work, communicate, and deliver services. We live in a stage of uncertainty on many levels, and the consequences are still in the process of analysis and conjecture.

You can access the World Health Organization dashboard and check a daily report to stay up to date. Also, we find very interesting a project led by some close friends: the COVID-19 Observatory, an MIT collaboration with the World Bank, which is bringing together an interdisciplinary group of researchers and private industry members with a shared mission to quantify the social and economic impacts of the pandemic.

Adaptation to the field

Almost every company in the world has undergone substantial changes in its operations and forecasts, triggering a new adaptive process that will lead to the emergence of new opportunities. In times of instability, the established scales move and new options are open for those who bring substantial solutions that are useful in the new situation.

Without a doubt, this is an important challenge to be faced by any company that wants to survive and remain competitive.

At olyseum, we’ve spent the past few weeks analyzing the situation and its implications, as well as rethinking our strategy. With millions of people locked up at home, influencers are in some ways more influential than ever, seeing stars getting massive reach from self-isolating fans. In addition to the heroism of health workers and all those involved in solving this problem, stars and other influential personalities have the opportunity to motivationally boost society and improve this situation.

And here comes an important aspect to consider: entertainment. More specifically, online entertainment. It is among the few sectors that, not only are not suffering large losses in this situation, but are also being benefited.

Netflix, the entertainment giant, doubled expected tally of new subscribers in the first three months of 2020 — a record for the company, fueled by the coronavirus quarantine. According to an interview by Variety to the Netflix chairman and CEO, Reed Hastings, “People want entertainment (…), they want to be able to escape and connect, whether times are difficult or joyous (…), our small contribution in these difficult times is to make home confinement a little more bearable”. Also, according to a recent survey, 17% of companies spent over half their marketing budget on influencers last year. Even though companies are redesigning their advertising budget management, another report from last month, estimated that influencer marketing would grow to $9.7 billion in 2020.

Unique opportunity

As the main focus of Olyseum’s value offering, digital content and services to entertain users and improve their connection with their idols of influence is something in high demand these days.

We are facing a situation that has never happened before in history, affecting the three fundamental parts on which our business is based:

  • People stuck at home looking for online entertainment on their tablets and mobiles.
  • Stars are also at home without being able to play matches, train with the team or travel to go to events.
  • Brands are relocating their budgets and strategies almost exclusively to digital media.

We have the strong conviction that it is a unique opportunity to launch the Olyseum stars team to start a much closer approach to break with the old one-way communication that always created dissatisfaction on both sides. We will strongly focus our efforts on ensuring that passions nurture hope, that the feeling of loneliness is dimmed, and that the concept of global community can flourish stronger than ever.

New Stars

We are starting to include the first group of stars with whom we want to launch the new mobile platform, and scale it from that with more stars and brands.

In a first initial onboarding, carried out the last few weeks, we have closed with a dozen top stars, from various categories:

  • Footballers from different European leagues
  • MotoGP and trial riders
  • Renowned cyclists
  • Gamers
  • Youtubers

The followers of the star with the minimum number of followers exceeds 150 thousand and the maximum reaches almost 40 million. The total number of combined followers that these specific stars have on their social networks exceeds 120 million.

But it doesn’t end there. Another of our focus comes with the brands, with whom we are closing deals to boost the network advertising and sponsorships. We will announce all of them after the launch, according to our marketing strategy.

Mobile app launch and token distribution

Our initial plans were focused on launching the new platform with our stars for the Tokyo2020 Olympics, scheduled to open on July 24th. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Olympics have been postponed. The games will be rescheduled to 2021, according to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Despite the uncertainty that the current situation brings in the medium term, our plans continue and our launch strategy has been adapted to the situation, emphasizing the relationship between fans, stars and brands in this stage of full or partial isolation, without impacting our release plan to launch in the middle of the third quarter.

Having the app live, the token will be also up and running to offer access to our main assets: for fans, exclusive experiences with stars; for brands, sponsorship of experiences and advertising.
