Omar Thinks: Medium, Mastodon and the Fediverse
The Fediverse. It’s a strange place. Like many things in the West, technology is also compartmentalized. But an old protocol called activity pub may be the thing to change that. David Pierce of the Verge has a solid breakdown of it.
A few months ago, when I joined Medium, I noticed a suggestion to get a Mastodon account. I have an Instagram account and Threads by extension, Facebook, Snapchat for my siblings, and Bluesky. I had Mastodon twice but deleted it twice. Like, why?
Lately, many people like yourself have come across my work. Thank you for your time. Please let me know your thoughts. I shared with my wife the connection between Medium and Mastodon and she thought getting an account would be a good idea. I thought, “What the heck? Third time is the charm?”
Which now leads me to tonight. Can this old protocol really change things? What will this do for Medium writers and our work? How can it affect our reach? I know figuring out this algorithm is tricky. Lea Bardot has a solid write up about it.
I wonder what I can do with it. Can this platform play a role in changing how people dialogue online minus the Substack drama? I do not know but I hope to be around for it. It is an interesting time to be online and I hope to be there for all of it.
If you are on Mastodon, I hope you will give me a follow. I would be happy to do the same.
