8 Ways Your Organization Can Benefit From Hosting an Omdena AI Challenge
Want to get a headstart into Artificial Intelligence and build solutions with a real positive impact?
No matter if your AI journey just starts or you are eager to improve your current solutions, community collaboration will bring you the best results.
As the Brazil Ambassador for Omdena, I have been in touch with many different kinds of organizations (mature companies, startups, NGOs, IGOs, foundations, institutions, etc.) that are interested to better understand how they can leverage AI.
What I observed is that many organizations don’t have their own AI definition yet. If they have one and found a starting point (e.g. a problem or use case) the next challenge is getting access to the right people in a resource-efficient way to move fast and build solutions for adoption.
As a global platform represented in more than 60 countries, Omdena gathers engineers and enthusiasts from different experience levels (from junior to AI experts) to develop AI solutions for real-life problems by hosting two-month AI challenges.
One of our challenge partners describes us in the following way,
Omdena is one of the world’s finest set of data science enthusiasts working for social good. We had reached out to some of the largest corporations to help us in the endeavor of building AI models that can be integrated in our application for preventing Sexual Harassment in India but it was the passion, empathy and sheer drive of the team at Omdena that led us to extraodinary solutions in only eight weeks. — Rahul, Global Tech Lead Safecity India.
How Organizations Can Benefit from Omdena´s AI Challenges
Through the diversity of our community, we are extremely well-positioned to create value for your organization in one or several of the following ways.
#1 Access to skilled AI talent to define your AI strategy
In our challenges organizations work with top talent to develop their AI solutions or to identify a suitable AI strategy. The problem with AI talent is that it is often too expensive, especially for mission-driven organizations and startups.
Currently, our community spans across 70 countries with more than 600 engineers who have proven themselves in our tough real-world challenges.
#2 Validate talent for your follow-up projects
If you are new to AI and thus don’t have an extensive track record of successful AI projects attracting the right talent is often a big challenge.
As our challenges take two months, and our partners have access to our contribution environment, they can interact on a daily basis with our collaborators to understand how they work to solve problems under pressure and how effective they are in a real-life situation.
The Omdena experience has helped me land multiple machine learning interviews, and one interviewer specifically noted my team management experience at Omdena. It shows that this is not only a platform to hone your machine learning skills, but also helps to take your career to the next level.
— Yang Gao, Machine Learning Engineer, USA
#3 Deploy a first pilot project
Tapping into the power of AI technologies requires customizing them to your organizational context. This will not be achieved by a pure consulting-driven approach.
Instead, pilot projects will give you real-world exposure and quick wins to make decisions regarding your internal AI adoption and related investments.
For example, together with the UN World Food Program in Nepal, we hosted a challenge on identifying crops and fighting hunger. Currently, we are exploring follow-up challenges.
The UN World Food Program Nepal is proud to have worked together with Omdena on one of the projects addressing zero hunger “crop area identification project. We believe this is the start of a long journey together.
#4 Setting up several pilot projects quickly
In this situation, we can not only help to identify the best projects, but we can also help to set them up in a very reliable manner in a time frame of only a couple of weeks.
#5 Develop an AI engine
The AI engine can be the differentiating element in your organizational strategy, increasing the value perception by market and facilitating access to funding. The organization can also benefit from accessing further stages in its life cycle development by doing so.
Together with mission-driven AI startup Spacept, in only 8 weeks we built a tree identification model with more than 95% accuracy to prevent fires sparked by falling trees close to power stations, reduce infrastructure repair costs, and save lives.
How to Build a High-Impact Deep Learning Model for Tree Identification
I’m part of an amazing AI challenge in Omdena’s community building a classification model for trees on satellite images…
#6 Scale a validated business model
Having an AI solution that fits in your modus operandi will accelerate your business development (more accelerated client acquisition strategy, greater operational capacity, etc).
Brazilian company Sintecsys is operating a solution in the market to detect wildfire outbreaks. Their solution already reduced 90% of losses. To take their product to the next level, they reached out to Omdena to host an AI challenge and build machine learning models that can detect fires both at night and during the day in real-time.
After receiving more than 200 applications from 30+ countries, currently, 50 highly qualified collaborators are working on several models simultaneously to find the best solutions to contribute to solving one of the grandest environmental challenges on the planet.
#7 Boost the throughput of your current AI projects
In this way, Omdena can work as a resourceful option delivering specific parts and AI models of greater projects increasing your current positioning.
#8 Increase the innovation perception of your organization
Being in any of the previous life cycle stages running an AI challenge will give you global exposure to be recognized as an innovation-driven organization. Besides, you will have the opportunity to internalize cutting edge practices and technologies along the way.
Beyond these examples, there are many other specific use cases for which Omdena´s AI challenges can help.
How an AI Challenge works
- An organization submits a problem or use case
- A two-month AI challenge will be launched inviting the AI community
3. A community of 30 to 50 engineers works together (with the organization) in a collaborative online environment
4. The AI solution will be delivered
