‘Stranger Things’

By now you’ve probably heard of the Netflix original series “Stranger Things.” And if you’re like me, you totally binge-watched the entire first season in a weekend. Now, one thing you likely noticed was that Eleven (or Elle, for short) doesn’t say very much. But exactly how many words does she say? Well, one fan re-watched the show’s first season to find out.

Be warned: Some of the information below may contain very minor spoilers.

‘Stranger Things’

So here’s the deal: reddit user ValdemarSt watched the show and took note of all the words and sentences Elle says in each episode.

Come to find out she uses a total of 246 different words.

But don’t be fooled: Just because she doesn’t say a lot definitely doesn’t make her any less of a badass.

As the pie chart below shows, she uses the fewest number of words in the series premiere (just “Eleven” and “no”), while she says 70 words during the second-to-last episode. For a full episode-by-episode breakdown of the words Elle uses, check out the original reddit thread.

You can also see an interactive visualization of the data (including both words and sentences) here.

Here are a few other interesting tidbits from the data:

  • Elle’s longest line in the season consists of only seven words, and occurs in the seventh episode, when she says, “Just…just hold on a little longer.”
  • Her average number of words per sentence is less than two.
  • Over one hundred of her sentences consist of only one word.
  • She says the word “Papa” twenty times, which makes up 8% of the words she utters during the season.

The final tally wasn’t calculated without some controversy, due to a scene in which Elle is heard screaming. Reddit user ValdemarSt explained, “I can understand that some people hear her say ‘stop it!’ while other people just hear a scream. I was a bit on the edge with this one, but chose to not count it as words.”

The first season of “Stranger Things” is currently streaming on Netflix, and the show has already been renewed for a second season of nine episodes.

“We’ll be doing more than just a rehash of season one,” executive producer Dan Cohen told Yahoo! about the upcoming second season. “We’re coming back with a few new characters, expanding storylines and mythologies, so it’ll feel like the stakes are raised and more is going on and really delivering on the promise and pushing for more.”
