“We believe that a brand or an item of good design should speak for itself as it is”, says the designer Eva Hubel, when we chatted with her last week in her store in Kreuzberg.

The brand SACK & ASCHE, officially founded in 2016 but developing since 2012, sees this philosophy as avant-garde fashion, upcycled streetwear combined with clean and wearable high quality fashion.

The style is surely independent, the colors vary in a range of blacks and greys, sand and stone tones and muddy colors. Materials are chosen to create contrasts. And they do it. “Some pieces are partly or completely upcycled, meaning made from fabric that has already been something else. Preferably we work with former worker’s uniforms of so-called dying jobs like chimney sweepers, coal carriers, bakers, GDR military clothes. We also use flour and coal sacks, bicycle tubes, firehose, and other things we get donated. Sometimes it happens that a material gives us the inspiration. Some garments can tell stories of their former life- like scars speak of experience”.

The contrast of creative material could be considered as one of the specialties of SACK & ASCHE. This interesting Postbag, for example, handcrafted in Berlin as a unique piece, shows a mix of strong grey polyester fabric, bronze imprinted and dark brown vintage fake leather. A cool urban stonish grey is combined with dark brown and shiny embossed bronze fake leather. It guarantees a unique futuristic style to wear in different occasions.

“We believe in unconventional ways of expression, designing should be fun and be more like playing with shapes and with material contrasts in sustainable ways. Combining the story that some of the upcycled items can tell and a high-quality production is pretty much the essence of SACK & ASCHE”, explains the designer.

We asked her which are her favorite products in her collection and she answered: “Using any material, shape and look that we want — this is exactly what we do — it’s hard to name a favorite piece, because the items that we’ve decided to produce are already our favorites. If I should pick two, they would be the bracket, because it’s useful, practical and unisex and the X-Cut, because of its extraordinary style and origami-folded pattern”.
