5 Hair and Skin Products I Started Using In My 40s

And my results…

As I entered my late 30s, I started noticing small changes in my skin and hair. It was nothing major, and it wasn't easy to pick up on given how gradual the aging process is. Then, in my early 40s, I started to notice my skin was drier in patches and more oily in others. A couple of years ago, my scalp became drier, and my hair breakage was more noticeable.

I firmly believe that we can age gracefully and that it is important to embrace our natural appearance 100%. I also know that taking care of myself makes me feel good. I am a Taurus and, therefore, quite Venusian in my ways. If you don’t know what that means — the basic deal is that we love beauty, comfort, soft pillows, and luxury. We also love our bodies.

Over the past 10 years, I have become increasingly focused on the environment, including my own carbon footprint and how my choices affect everything around me. This is also a Taurus thing — we are Earth people. We love the natural beauty of nature, and we have the seeds of motivating within to protect it fiercely.

This means that I do my best to find (and even make) natural and environmentally friendly products. In some cases, I am not able to find a natural product available. For example, the most natural hair color brand I have found is Madison Reed; however, you cannot get salon quality at home, and they only have a handful of physical salon locations. This brand is also limited in its color selection, and there are no natural options for lifting pigment if you want to go blonde. (This is more a science thing than a failing on their part.)

Anyway, I do a lot of personal research about natural beauty products. In this article, I wanted to share 5 products that I have started using in my 40s to help with my changing hair and skin. Some of these products are more natural than others, but I have found all of them effective for what I needed.

In case you are wondering, I have not been paid to promote any of these products. I took the story image photo using products that sit on my bathroom counter — and I paid full price for them. I have been ordering most of them from Amazon during the pandemic. Before the 2020 lockdown, I used to purchase my SIBU products at my local health food store.

For information about the 5 products, please keep reading…

Aveda Dry Remedy

Aveda Dry Remedy is a daily moisturizer for your hair. It is an oil blend with a pleasant though somewhat strong scent. (If you are very sensitive to smell or scents trigger migraines for you, I would look at another product.) If you are interested in the ingredients, you can find them listed on the Aveda website.

How To Use It
To use it, you put 2–4 drops of the oil in your hand and rub through the hair, starting at the ends. This is super easy to add to your routine. If you wash your hair in the morning, add a little either before drying or right after. On days when you do not wash your hair, you can add in this step right after teeth brushing.

My Results and Amazon Product Ratings
I have noticed added shine and less breakage after using this oil. I get really consistent about using it 1–2 weeks before coloring because it helps fortify the hair cuticle before processing. (For an interesting 101 introduction to hair cuticles, you can check out the article Hair Cuticle 101 — The Most Important Part of Your Hair.) Overall, my hair looks healthier when I use it consistently.

This product has 527 product reviews on Amazon. The rating is 4.7 out of 5, with 84% 5-star reviews.

Where To Buy It
You can purchase this product from Amazon or the Aveda website.

The Honest Company Sweet Orange Vanilla Conditioning Detangler Spray

The Honest Conditioner Detangler is a detangling, leave-in conditioner. You can feel great about the quality of this product. It is vegan and paraben and synthetic fragrance-free. I originally purchase this to use for my child. However, I noticed that as my hair was getting drier, I had more breakage happening when I was combing out after washing. So, I added this product to my routine to see if it would help.

How To Use It
After towel drying, spray 3–5 pumps around the hair. If your hair is shorter, go with 3. For longer hair, I would say 6 max. This is because it can make the hair a little filmy and sticky if you use too much.

My Results and Amazon Product Ratings
Being gentle with hair when it is wet is a great practice for keeping it healthy at any age. I have seen improvement in the amount of hair that comes out in the brush when I comb after washing. Rather than the conditioning benefits, I have found this product most effective for helping with breakage and hair loss due to wet brushing.

This product has 27,842 ratings on Amazon! It is rated at a 4.5 out of 5, with 72% 5-star reviews.

Where To Buy It
You can purchase this product from Amazon and the Honest Company website.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel Cleanser for Oily Skin

This is a more traditional brand product, and I chose to purchase it for two reasons: 1) I have some issues with hormonal acne; and 2) I was getting stubborn, repetitive acne breakouts in the area where I wear my face mask.

How To Use It
Wet your face and put a nickel-size amount of the gel in your hand. Gently apply it to the face rubbing in a circular motion. When ready, rinse your face repeatedly using a washcloth or your preferred method. I recommend moisturizing afterward.

My Results and Amazon Product Ratings
I have seen some improvement from using this product. I do not use it daily as I do not want to dry out my skin. What is nice is that I have not noticed significant dry skin patches, as is common when using other medicated products like this. I did, however, have to add a product for spot treatment of my chin — the area where I wear a face mask.

The company recently released a new formula that includes salicylic acid, which I expect is not as gentle but may be more effective for stubborn acne issues.

There are 6,420 ratings for the product with the new formula with a rating of 4.6 out of 5. There are 75% 5-star reviews.

Where To Buy It
You can purchase this product from Amazon.

Jupiter On-the-Go Scalp Soothing Elixir

This is probably my favorite product on this list. I have thyroid issues, and thyroid hormone issues tend to cause dry skin. As I am aging, my scalp needs more care and attention — especially after I color my hair. My stylist recommended that I use tea tree essential oil on my scalp, but then I started looking around for product options and found Jupiter. I purchased it based on the great reviews.

How To Use It
There is a dropper that you can use to apply drops directly to your scalp. You have to be a little careful to get it down to the skin rather than applying it to the roots of your hair, but it is really no trouble; I apply it to 5–7 areas and rub it in as I go. The one thing is that I would use this while working from home. It tends to make the hair roots a little greasy, so this is not a product to use as a hairstyle “finisher” before going out. If you don’t want to use it daily, you could make a Sunday evening routine and put it on before bed.

My Results and Amazon Product Ratings
I feel immediate scalp relief and refreshment from using this product. I think that if I use it more regularly, it would have more effect on my dry scalp. It is a good product, so I will try doing that and see how it works.

This product has 23 Amazon ratings and a 4.2 out of 5. 79% of the ratings are 5-star. I was wondering why it only got a 4.2, so I read some reviews. One person who rated it 1-star said that it didn’t relieve scalp itching. If severe dandruff or scaling is an issue, those people will need something additional to support them. If your issue is “run-of-the-mill” dry scalp like mine, I think those reviews account for the 5 stars. One person said, “immediate relief,” which is also what I experienced.

Where To Buy It
You can purchase this product from Amazon.

SIBU Polishing Facial Cleanser

I LOVE SIBU products. This is not the only one I use, but I have been using this product consistently for the past 5+ years. It provides very gentle exfoliation and leaves my skin looking bright. The secret to these products is the Sea Buckthorn oil. In addition to lightening and brightening skin, it provides a host of other benefits such as reducing skin inflammation and stimulating skin regeneration. This Healthline article provides details if you are interested.

How To Use It
Use this the same as any facewash. Wet your face, use a quarter-sized amount, and rub in a circular, upward motion. Rinse as many times as needed.

My Results and Amazon Product Ratings
I see noticeable lightening and brightening when I use this product, which is why I have used it consistently for such a long time without switching out and trying something new.

This product has 257 ratings on Amazon and 4.5 out of 5 stars. 71% of the reviews are 5 stars. I noticed that some people complained that the pump didn’t work on the bottle. I have noticed this also — it happens on maybe 1 out of 5 bottles. I usually take a pump from my old bottle, and that solves that. It is certainly not enough of an issue for me to think about changing products. I think this would be in the 4.9 rating range if reviews about packaging were excluded, but I didn’t do the math.

Where To Buy It
