“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” -Vince Lombardi

Vince Lombardi’s Success

Vince Lombardi is arguably known as one of the best NFL football coaches of all time. In his career, Lombardi was best known for coaching the Green Bay Packers and leading them to win five NFL Championships, including Super Bowls I and II.

Not only was Lombardi known as a dedicated coach, but he was also known for his incredible leadership skills. Lombardi was such an inspirational leader and coach that many businesses today still think of him as an example of what a successful leader looks like.

Vince Lombardi’s Leadership

Lombardi was a driver and a perfectionist. He pushed his team to play the best that they possibly could, and then tell them to “run it again.”

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”

He believed that winning was a habit. He pushed his players to have the same mentality, and if they didn’t, they often would get let go. He didn’t waste any time with anyone whose heart was not entirely in the game.

“Winning is a habit. Watch your thoughts; they become your beliefs. Watch your beliefs; they become your words. Watch your words; they become your actions. Watch your actions; they become your habits. Watch your habits; they become your character.”

If you allow yourself to do a job “good enough” or if you don’t push yourself to grow more, you aren’t winning. Lombardi’s right. Even in the business world or anything else in life, if we don’t push ourselves to be better, we won’t grow. Make winning a habit.

Vince Lombardi had a strong relationship with his team. He held his team accountable, and he held himself accountable. Who would trust a leader who wouldn’t do the same amount of work and more? A leader does not cut corners.

How His Leadership Relates to Businesses Today

Vince Lombardi compared leadership and team building in any business to a football game. Lombardi believed that everyone on the team matters, and if there was anyone not working to their fullest potential, they affected the whole team.

“Individual commitment to a group effort — that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

There are many books written about team building, leadership, and running a business that ties with Vince Lombardi’s philosophies. Here are a couple of Lombardi quotes regarding business development.

“Football is like life — it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication, and respect for authority.”

“Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

“The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

Whatever you do in life, be the best at it. Go for your goals, and make a habit of winning.
