About bricked iPhone 8 with third-party repaired displays by latest iOS 11.3 Update

April 12, 2018

Dear Tim Cook, dear fellows at Apple

You may me aware of the recent bricking of the iPhone 8 of third-party repairs of broken iPhone 8 displays. As a new report from Vice relays that the recent iOS 11.3 update you Apple rolled out late last month appears to be bricking iPhone 8 units with screens provided by third-party repair shops.

This procedure of making the iPhone 8 after a third Party display replacement not usable anymore, is for customers not sustainable and frankly outrageous! Especially in regions were no direct Apple Support is or may be available.

As one of the largest and most popular smartphone manufacturers on the planet, it could hurt the repair movement by making it difficult to fix your phone outside its ecosystem. Also it is an important debate right now as states across the U.S. debate right to repair laws.

Apple — You’re the manufacturer. Ultimately, you hold all the cards. But use them wisely!

Another point is the repair situation for the iPhone X. You can’t even properly do a display repair without going to Apple. So that frustrating too. But it is also developed technology. But technology should also not be too restrictive on third-party appliances such as repairs. As this a fundamental important use case for customers. Apple — You’re the manufacturer. Ultimately, you hold all the cards. But use them wisely!

So at least you should do something about the iPhone 8 users who are affected by this. If the phone could operate previous to the iOS 11.3 update it should be possibile further on for those phone with a replaced third-party display.
