How is the Dark Web different from the regular web?

The regular web, also known as the Surface Web, is what most people use daily. It includes all websites that can be found using a search engine.

The Deep Web, on the other hand, refers to all parts of the internet not indexed by search engines, including databases, private networks, and the Dark Web.

The Dark Web is a small subset of the Deep Web, characterized by its intentional anonymity and inaccessibility through standard web browsers.

Why can’t search engines index the Dark Web?

These websites often use overlay networks like Tor, which conceal their IP addresses and make them untraceable.

What is an Overlay Network?

An overlay network is a communication network built on top of another network. It is a logical network created on top of an existing physical or underlying network infrastructure. Nodes in the overlay network are connected by virtual or logical links, each of which corresponds to a path, perhaps through many physical links, in the underlying network.

What is Tor?

Tor, short for “The Onion Router,” is an example of an overlay network designed to provide anonymous communication. It is a free and open-source software that enables users to browse the internet anonymously by routing their internet traffic through a worldwide volunteer network of servers.

How does Tor enable anonymity?

Tor enables anonymity by routing internet traffic through a network of volunteer-operated servers, called nodes, and encrypting the data at each step. When a user sends data through the Tor network, it is encrypted and passed through multiple nodes in random order, making it difficult for anyone to trace the user’s internet activity or physical location. Each node only knows the address of the previous and next nodes in the circuit, but not the entire path.
