The Worst Advice About Love (and Why You Should Ignore It)
11 things your mother may have told you when she shouldn’t have
1. You’ll just know (you’ve found The One).
You might, but this is usually said by slightly smug people in retrospect when their relationship HAS worked out. Plenty of people thought they’d found The One only to discover their dream partner was not at all who they thought they were. Or that, over time, they changed beyond recognition.
The moral of any love story is that you might “just know” when you’ve found the love of your life, but do some intel gathering before you throw your whole heart into it. And don’t beat yourself up if you get it wrong. High chances are it’s them, not you.
2. Love will conquer all.
Yes, love makes the world go round. Love, and connection, is arguably foundation of happiness. And the counterpoint to hate.
But love won’t feed the dog, pay the bills, put out the trash on Wednesdays or bring you chicken soup when you’re sick. Love is good (when it’s good) and it should be celebrated and appreciated.
But love can’t do everything, not even close. And it’s unreasonable, not to mention naive, to expect it to.
