By day, Anthony Phillips is a Senior Operator Specialist driving Street Sweepers for Austin Resource Recovery, but outside of work, Anthony is a dance skater, video game streamer, and personal trainer. Prior to performing in The Trash Project through his work at Austin Resource Recovery, Anthony starred in the lesser-known 2008 Forklift Danceworks production SKATE!

An homage to all there is to love about life at the rink, SKATE! featured over 30 community roller skaters and a score of favorite roller rink tunes. SKATE! showcased all of the elements one might observe on a night at Austin’s Playland Skate Center, from ladies’ choice to all-skate, men’s speed skate to couple’s backwards skate. The cast included teens through adults (oldest skater was 72!) and included local jam skaters, competitive figure skaters, and even a few rollergirls.

Anthony recently spoke with Forklift choreographer Gretchen LaMotte about how he met Artistic Director Allison Orr, how making SKATE! deepened his craft, and what happened when Orr showed up at his job to make another dance. Listen to their full conversation above.

On the Job: 20 Portraits from 20 Years highlights the work of twenty people who have collaborated and performed with Forklift Danceworks. Featuring new interviews between Forklift choreographers and our collaborators, the series shares the voices and experiences of people whose work sustains our communities.

New portraits will be released each month, so follow us on Facebook and Instagram to meet more Forklift performers throughout the year!

This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
