Edwin Turk is a self-identified garbage-man-turned-Functional Application Manager for Clean City, a sanitation company serving the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. A long-time computer enthusiast, Edwin now gets to apply his years driving trash trucks to help support and improve the technology used by Clean City drivers every day.

Edwin, Allison, Krissie, and the cast of The Trash Project Rotterdam after the show.

In 2017, Edwin and his colleagues at Clean City (formerly Roteb) collaborated on The Trash Project Rotterdam, a week-long residency and mini performance that were part of the annual International Community Arts Festival. During the residency, Forklift choreographers Allison Orr and Krissie Marty shadowed Edwin and other employees, hosted a screening of Trash Dance, and co-created original choreography with the people and trucks of Clean City. Read more and see clips from the project here.

Since then, Edwin has joined Forklift for a residency in Barcelona and participated in dialogues with other Forklift performers from cities around the country and worldwide. Krissie and Edwin recently caught up via Zoom and talked about Edwin’s essential role in the project and how their short time working together made a lasting impact. Listen to their conversation above.

On the Job: 20 Portraits from 20 Years highlights the work of twenty people who have collaborated and performed with Forklift Danceworks. Featuring new interviews between Forklift choreographers and our collaborators, the series shares the voices and experiences of people whose work sustains our communities.

New portraits will be released each month, so follow us on Facebook and Instagram to meet more Forklift performers throughout the year!

This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
