Que pasa con podcasting? This month is an extra special one for me and my company, FRQNCY Media. Yes, the leaves are finally changing and it’s not blistering hot anymore (por fin), but more importantly it’s the month when we celebrate mi gente — the Latinx community — and all of the creativity, sazón, and #werk we contribute.

I myself am a proud first-generation American from Colombia. I founded FRQNCY in 2018 in large part because of an immigrant upbringing that imbued in me the importance of accessibility, affordability, and community.

To help us celebrate Latin@s in podcasting, I put together a list of just a few of my favorite podcasts by Latinx creators.

What are your favorites?

Mija Podcast

The daughter of immigrants tells the story of her family, those alive, those long gone, and those still dreaming. Hosted by a narrator known only as Mija (“my daughter” in Spanish), each episode tells the story of how members of her family experience immigration. If you’ve just stumbled upon our show, start with episode 1: Mija and work your way up. Listeners can tune into Mija in English, French, Spanish and Mandarin versions. Mija Podcast is produced by Studio Ochenta, a multilingual podcast studio dedicated to raising voices across cultures

Kalila Stormfire’s Economical Magick Services

Glamour spell gone wrong? Astral projection got you untethered? Want to know why your angry dead rich father is haunting you? Consider Kalila Stormfire’s Economical Magick Services.

After a controversial fallout with her coven, Kalila Stormfire must juggle complex clients and an anonymous critic hellbent on besmirching her new business. The decaying urban block where Kal operates appreciates her affordable experience in a broad range of supernatural ailments and remedies. Still, Kal is not sure if her talent is enough to stop whoever has been posting bad reviews and persuading customers to cancel appointments.

If you like stories about minority witches in modern-day working class neighborhoods, meddling love goddesses, and morally ambiguous spellcraft…this is the tale for you.

The Cultured Podcast

This is my — and FRQNCY’s — baby. I host the The Cultured Podcast, and am proud of the stories we get to tell through it. Our show description puts it best: Discover artists and art forms you never knew existed in this biweekly podcast hosted by arts and culture-obsessed Michelle Khouri. Every other week, Michelle sits down with wildly imaginative creators, performers, and makers from around the world to have relaxed conversations that leave you wide-eyed and inspired.

The Self-ish Latina

The Self-ish Latina podcast uses a creative storytelling approach that gets under the hood on how Latinx culture, family, and society shape our beliefs and behaviors around who we think we are, what we believe is possible and ultimately, discovering where we belong.

Scattered (WNYC)

Chris Garcia’s dad had one dying wish: That his family scatter his ashes off the coast of Cuba. Chris’s mom? She doesn’t give a crap about dying wishes. She’s vowed to never go back to Cuba again.

As Chris tries to do right by his dad, he sets out to uncover the truth about a man he barely knew.

Scattered is produced by WNYC Studios, home of other great podcasts including Radiolab, Death, Sex & Money, On the Media and Nancy.

Radio Ambulante

Radio Ambulante es un podcast pionero en español que cuenta crónicas latinoamericanas en audio, celebrando la diversidad y complejidad de la región. / Radio Ambulante is an award-winning Spanish language podcast that uses long-form audio journalism to tell neglected and under-reported Latin American and Latino stories.
