“Which one has the highest content of caffeine in it?” Kaira asked the lady standing behind the counter. She couldn’t afford to doze off; she had a long day ahead. Still intoxicated with the previous night’s bliss, she craved for a sober morning to absorb the unforgettable, unapologetic yet disguisable night.

“Enjoy your order ma’am.” She kept the tray on the table and passed a pleasant smile to her. “Thank you”, Kaira replied, being genuinely thankful for bringing a hopeful remedy for her aching head and her drowsy eyes.

Her head was throbbing consistently while she tried to recall the details of last night. She was about to take her first sip of coffee when a vibration bothered her. Fearing, it would be ‘him’, she repudiated pulling the phone out of her bag. After a few more unanswered phone calls, a few more minutes of throbbing head, and a few more currents of anxiety passing through her body she decided to face her apprehensions.

“Good morning love.”

The voice from the other side of the phone trembles her to the core.

“Where are you? I was calling you last night. I was worried about you. Are you alright?”

His concerns felt like gunshots aimed at her. She sensed her lips freezing in silence, confining the truth within them, allowing her to maintain peace with this man.

“I was with my girlfriends last night. It was a sudden plan. Crazy night we had! I didn’t even check my phone the whole time. We had an amazingly engrossing time together. Ahh! I wish to relive it again!” She shudders when the last sentence of her blabbering ended. She feared, she had expressed more than he needed to hear.

“What are you talking about, Kaira? Do you not experience such great nights with me anymore?” He evidently sighed and left Kaira tongue-tied. She hesitated to unveil herself in front of him. The pleasure of last night was as genuine as the fright of today’s confrontation. She had never lied to him, not before she had met Bud.

“Would he be able to understand me?” she asked herself. “Or would he leave me after knowing the truth?” She tried to presume the possibilities. A few more seconds of stillness passed by; she finally concluded not to assume his reactions anymore and ‘come-clean’ to him immediately.

“Err… Actually … I wanted to tell… Last night … I was with …” She whispered softly with her eyes closed, her heart pounding, her palms sweating, her feet cringing, with her whole body shivering. Before she could utter another word, he broke the awkwardness with a loud fit of laughter, loud enough to shake her with surprise.

“Take it easy sweetheart. Why do you take such things seriously?” He continues to laugh naively, leaving her astonished with his reaction. She didn’t dare to speak any more, fearing she would turn the course of conversation against her comfort.

She took a sigh of relief only when he calmly disconnected the phone call. She found herself back to that tiny coffee-shop which was still pleasantly warm; to the morning which was still lovingly shining; to the coffee which was now undesirably cold; and to the woman behind the counter who was busy attending other customers. Next to all this, Kaira had her eyes fixed on the mobile phone, and her mind drenched in a pool of complex-emotions.

She picked up a pen and started scribbling on the paper lying beneath that unattended cup of coffee, and made these words her sole confidant:

Sebastian

“The sun hidden behind the clouds calls out to me;

The beautiful sky, the quiet sea, calls out to me.

Sand on my feet, on my skirt;

Love all around, calls out to me.

A voice breaks the silence, “you aren’t as innocent as you look”.

And here innocence calls out to me.”

Hit and spread the love.
