Meeting on Strengthening One Health Cooperation in Vietnam in line with the National One Health Strategic Plan (OHSP) 2016–2020

Following the success of the two National Action Plans for the periods 2006–2011 and 2011–2015, the One Health Partnership recently held a meeting on Strengthening One Health cooperation in Vietnam in line with the national One Health Strategic Plan (OHSP) 2016–2020.

The four co-chairs of the meeting were Mr. Michael Greene, Mission Director— USAID Vietnam, Ms. Akiko Fuji — Director of Development Programs at United Nations in Vietnam, Mr. Vu Van Tam — Vice Minister, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Long — Vice Minister, Ministry of Health. The meeting was attended by representatives from international and national organizations in Vietnam, including the Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment, International Livestock Research Institute, French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development, Vietnam One Health University Network(VOHUN), and other stakeholders.

Mr. David Payne reviewed the One Health Strategic Plan for the period of 2015 to 2020. The main goals are to decrease the health impact of zoonoses and to promote the One Health approach.

Dr. Pham Duc Phuc discusses the future of the Vietnam One Health University Network.

Dr. Pham Duc Phuc, coordinator of the Vietnam One Health University Network, introduced VOHUN’s achievements in the last year, including the number of students trained in One Health using courses developed by VOHUN members, the number of current One Health workers (lecturers, health staff and veterinary staff) trained in One Health core competencies and the successful masters of public health training programs being developed and implemented (International Masters of Public Health — One Health oriented; Masters of Public Health — Environmental Health and the Masters of Veterinary Science — specializing in Veterinary Public Health). All masters programs are expected to increase collaboration between Public Health and Veterinary students). Moreover, he also presented VOHUN’s future for the period of 2016 to 2020 including development of modules for veterinary and public health students in zoonotic diseases, wildlife health and diseases, One Health and environmental waste management.
