Week one was better than any month so far.
This is the first week of August, and it’s already looking better than all my other months. And that was before I made a single post or did any sort of marketing. So it’s looking to get even better in the next three weeks or so, and I’m excited.
Not about to make millions, don’t get too excited.
The One Medium Change I Made
The only thing I did differently was respond to the articles I was reading. One tiny change seems to have made a world of difference. And it was one that I wasn’t sure about making. It was entirely worth it, however, and I do not regret making it in the slightest. I’m far more engaged on Medium now, to the point where I actually have to set limits on my time spent reading and responding so that I can get other work done, like write words on my novel.
Why I Rarely Responded
Generally, I didn’t feel like I had anything to add that wasn’t already said. And who was I to say anything at all, really? I don’t really know the Medium platform all that well, and it seemed silly to just thank someone for a post without adding something semi-intelligent. To put it bluntly, I was scared. Scared that I had nothing to say, and scared that I had too much to say. Scared that what I said wouldn’t be well received. Scared that it wouldn’t matter, wouldn’t make a difference.
What Changed My Mind
I don’t know that anything specific changed my mind, it was more a process. I started finding articles that I had a response for, and it just snowballed from there. I also don’t usually care all that much what people think of me personally, but it can be another world when I’m putting my writing out there for general consumption. While I know not everyone is going to like it, I do want the majority to enjoy it, get something out of it, and understand it.
What I’m Doing Now
Now I try to respond to most articles I read, and my stats show it. Of course, as far as I know, I don’t get paid for those. Correct me if I’m wrong. But I am seeing some of those views on my own stories, and my follower count is going up, as are my claps.
Not a huge amount, granted, but I’m still new and feeling my way through how Medium works as a platform. I’m excited to have broken 1000 views for a 30 day period, even if 99% of that is on my responses rather than my stories. And nothing is suddenly spiking, or what have you, but things are looking better than they did before all this as I am seen around Medium.
My grand total from week one? $.79, which is so far more than I have made yet. And the month isn’t over yet, in fact, it has really just begun. Lots of room to maneuver, that’s for sure. I don’t yet really have a strategy for Medium, but one is slowly taking shape as I learn what works, what doesn’t, what helps and what hinders. Seriously thank the gods for all the Medium advice out there as well, or I may be going insane trying to figure it all out. Nah, experimenting is too much fun to drive me insane, who am I kidding?
Week Two Update: I am now up over $2 for the first time ever! My highest payout so far was $.72, and I beat that in week one. Now that I’m in actual dollars, I feel excited and somewhat relieved. Now onwards to see what else Medium might bring me!
