1 DEFINING DEEP TECH
Beyond the familiar definition of “tech” which now designates web platforms and mobile apps, Deeptech is Innovation based on a scientific or technological breakthrough. Deeptech lie at the crossroads of massive shifts in demand led by megatrends (such as global climate change, demographic shifts, resource scarcity, and an aging population) and scientific progress (such as the discovery of the CRISPR-Cas microbial adaptive immune system). Deeptech technologies address big societal and environmental challenges and will likely shape the way we solve some of the most pressing global problems.
Advanced materials, Artificial intelligence, Biotechnology, Blockchain, Drones and robotics, Photonics and electronics, Quantum computing are some so-call technologies are listed in the deeptech category.
2. DEEP TECH, ABCD TECH, EMERGING TECH?
ABCD Tech and Deep Tech are the two tech terms that can make us confused sometimes. So, what are differences?
ABCD Tech means Artificial intelligence, Blockchain, Cloud and Data (big or small). It’s simple and clear, as the name.
Deep technology on the other hand, is disruptive technologies based on scientific discoveries, engineering, mathematics, physics and medicine. Deep tech also includes, among other things, artificial intelligence, deep learning and machine learning.
Deep tech companies are using the emerging tech, IoT, and other things as the infrastructure to built on tangible scientific discoveries or engineering innovations solve big issues that really affect the world.

3. CHALLENGES FOR DEEP TECH COMPANIES?
Because they are advancing the technological frontier, they face unique challenges are time to market, capital intensity, and technology risk and complexity.
However, the good news is Growth in global private investment in deep tech from 2015 through 2018 increase 20% per year. Deep tech companies consistently receive more funding than other kinds of tech firms.
4. DEEPTECH MOVEMENTS AROUND THE WORLD
Investors and corporate have already started to move toward deep tech.
- Google created Google Life Sciences, now known as Verily.
- Google, Facebook, Amazon, IBM, and Microsoft created a partnership in AI research.
- Apple, Google, Uber is implementing its driverless car services.
- Facebook is also investing in Artificial Intelligence, drones and virtual reality.
5. DEEP TECH ECOSYSTEM IN VIETNAM: THE SHIFT HAS JUST BEGUN!
The collaborations from key stakeholders in ecosystems as universities, the public sector, business angels, venture capitalists and corporates have crucial roles for a well-functioning deep tech innovation ecosystem.
Recently, we see a shifting role for governments — Vietnam Government have emphasized that Science, Technology, and Innovation as a Pillar for Socio-Economic Development in Vietnam and pushed forward to adjust the national legal framework to boost wide applications of latest technologies.
