Perfectionism is good at one thing.

It’s good at preventing you from getting started in the first place. Let alone actually publishing your work.

If you’re a writer who grapples with perfectionism, you won’t have to puzzle over whether you should publish or not. Because perfectionism will stop you from writing an article in the first place.

Nevertheless, there’s a psychology behind perfectionism.

Behind perfectionism are feelings of unworthiness and low self-esteem. There is also a fear of failure. We want to feel accepted. And if we fail, we will be unworthy of acceptance.

Consequently, perfectionism becomes another creative block. One that is quite difficult to move past. We won’t even put pen to paper unless we’re sure it will be 100% perfect.

But real-world examples show us how doing our best is good enough. From psychological theories to the art world, we see that it’s perfectly acceptable if we are not perfect.

Not only is perfection impossible to achieve; but people like it much better when you are not perfect. Because they can relate to your humanness.
