So, last week I mentioned that it was all about fantasy/superhero films, but…that seems to be the case for every week as well. Whoops?

1. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

What is this movie about?

A sequel to Godzilla (2014) film and a prequel to the 2020 Godzilla vs. Kong mashup, this film is directed by Michael Dougherty (who also co-writes).

It doesn’t star much of the original cast, though, with only Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe returning.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

It showcases the new cast: there’s Stranger Things’ Milly Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Zhang Ziyi.

Also, it confirms that Godzilla will face off against Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah.

Why the hell should you care about this?

I didn’t watch the first film, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it was actually quite well-received (75% on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t bad). I’m interested to see how this one does.

2. Star Trek Discovery Season 2

What is this show about?

This is the second season for the Star Trek series; it follows the crew of the USS Discovery, and is set about 10 years before the other two series. The first season focused on building the world of the Federation-Klingon war through the eyes of Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham, culminating in a (sorta) truce.

They then receive a distress call from USS Enterprise, which is headed by Captain Christopher Pike…

That person you see above in the thumbnail for the trailer? That’s Spock.

Yup, this Spock:

It follows him joining the crew, and warning of a ‘Red Angel’ that’s going to kill them all.

So, small stuff.

Why the hell should you care about this?

Anson Mount is the new Christopher Pike, and I really want to see how he handles the crew together with Spock.

Plus, I’ve watched the first season and I’ve been eagerly awaiting this, so…January is going to be good!

3. Titans Season 1 Finale

What is this show about?

Have you ever watched the animated show, Teen Titans?

This…is not the same thing.

Titans is a show that focuses around Dick Grayson, i.e. Robin, as he protects a young Raven from her evil villain father and his zealots. The team is rounded out by Starfire and Beast Boy, and besides Robin, the rest of them are newly powered, so they’re not great with controlling it. There’s swearing, killing, and creepy-ass villains.

Also, if you’ve been watching, you would know that Robin left Gotham City because he felt that Batman was becoming a bad influence.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

Marketed as a Robin vs. Batman face-off, this finale brings Robin (and Starfire) to Gotham City, where it seems like Batman has finally snapped and killed the most prominent members of his Rogues Gallery.

And yes, Batman appears, even though the actor putting on the cowl hasn’t been announced…

Why the hell should you care about this?

It’s interesting because the trailer makes no mention of Raven, or the events of the previous episode, making the entire finale episode seem disconnected from the rest of the season.

Also, this show has already been confirmed for Season 2, so you don’t need to worry about cliff-hanger cancellations.

4. Black Monday

What is this show about?

Created by David Caspe (of Happy Endings), this show stars Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells and Regina Hall in a show about the famed Black Monday stock crash in 1987.

Yes, it’s a comedy.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

It follows Don Cheadle waking up from a dream where he talks about dragons, spliced with frenetic scenes from the series. Expect lots of freakouts and yelling (and dragons) I guess.

5. True Detective Season 3

What is this show about?

After mixed reviews for its second season, the third series in the True Detective anthology is here. This time, Mahershala Ali is in the McConaughey/Farrell role as the show goes through three different time periods in the Ozarks.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

It’s saying to expect a hell of an intense performance from Ali, as his detective character is tortured by a series of murders over many years.

Why the hell should you care about this?

MAHERSHALA ALI.
