New year, new shows to binge. This week was full of trailers for Netflix shows and movies:

1. Carmen Sandiego

What is this show about?

Another fictional character gets a backstory.

This animated show on Netflix will explain the ‘Who’ behind famed robber Carmen Sandiego, and showcase how she became the thief we all know and love/hate.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

It’s saying that Gina Rodriguez is preparing for her live-action take on the character by practising her voice as the titular Carmen.

We see Carmen as she joins villain school V.I.L.E as a child, and observe how she trains to become the best thief in the world. The trailer then jumps to her as an adult, assisted by a character played by Finn Wolfhard (from Stranger Things) on comms.

Why the hell should you care about this?

Do you know how many hours I spent playing the Carmen Sandiego game when I was a kid?

TOO MANY.

2. Arctic (2019)

What is this movie about?

A survival film starring Mads Mikkelsen, this film was set and shot in Iceland. It features a man who has to decide whether to leave the safety of his temporary camp to get help, after he is stranded in the Arctic.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

The trailer shows that he does, indeed, leave his camp, but (seemingly) only because there’s a woman who’s hurt (?) and about to die.

He then charts a course and walks out into the snow, dragging the woman on a sled, to get her help.

Expect a lot of huffing and puffing; this trailer is not shy when it comes to plunging the viewer into the eyes of the main character.

Why the hell should you care about this?

Will Hannibal eat dead people here? Tune in to find out.

3. The Punisher Season 2

What is this show about?

One of two Netflix-Marvel shows still surviving, The Punisher returns for season 2 on 18th January.

It continues to star the same characters as those from the first season, so that should be interesting.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

The Punisher and Jigsaw are going to fight.

That’s….basically it.

Why the hell should you care about this?

It’s almost definitely going to be cancelled, just as the others have been, so it’ll be fun to see what the creators do with the season/series finale.

4. Project Blue Book

What is this show about?

Get ready to delve into the world of UFOs!

Project Blue Book is a series on the History Channel, based on an actual study conducted by the US government back in the 1950s.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

Aidan Gillen (from Game of Thrones) stars in this series as astrophysicist Josef Allen Hynek, who is recruited by the government to prove that there are no such things as UFOs.

So far, the series looks like it’s a detective show that’ll slowly go through cases of ‘sightings’ in each episode.

Why the hell should you care about this?

If you’ve always wanted to know about UFOs, but didn’t want to listen to men wearing tinfoil hats, this might be the show for you.

5. Close (2019)

What is this movie about?

An action-thriller film starring Noomi Rapace, Close focuses on her character, a bodyguard who is hired to protect a rich heiress. Of course, nothing goes to plan, and they are forced to go on the run.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

The trailer sorta goes through the entire plot: there’s the introduction of both characters, then their trip to a desert, where they then have to keep fighting and hiding to get…somewhere.

Why the hell should you care about this?

Female director, female stars, serious action scenes.
