It was a week of Fantasy/Sci-Fi and Superheroes, guys.

1. Avengers: Endgame (2019)

What is this movie about?

Do I really need to explain this? After all, I think that the internet might have meme-ed Avengers: Infinity War to death already.

Basically, bad guy Thanos won in Avengers: Infinity War, and murdered half the Earth’s population with one snap of his fingers. This is the sequel to that.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

…What a whopper. Okay, let’s do this.

The trailer starts with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) saying his goodbyes while floating in space, after running out of food and water (and soon-to-be oxygen supply). We then see Captain America (Chris Evans) commiserating with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) about all the people they’ve lost, while Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) look sad as hell.

And then Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) appears in a fight, looking bad-ass as hell (which he should, considering he wasn’t in Infinity War at all), while Captain America and Black Widow come up with a plan.

Oh, and then just when the trailer ends, we’re blessed with a scene where Ant-Man (whom they thought they lost) yells at their security camera, trying to get into their building.

Or, to put that last part concisely in one gif:

Why the hell should you care about this?

It’s been a long journey with this Avengers arc, guys. Let’s finish it.

Also, considering that RDJ and Chris Evans’ contracts end with this film, it’ll be fun to see if they die, or just…walk off into the sunset.

2. Captain Marvel (2019)

What is this movie about?

It’s Marvel Studios’ first movie starring a female superhero!

Her name is Captain Marvel!

Okay, with that exclamation out of the way…this movie is about Captain Marvel, an alien who used to be a human. Set in the 90s, this film delves into her origin story.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

This is actually the second trailer; the first one focused on her powers, while this one talks about her story.

It sets the film up as an origin story in reverse: Captain Marvel seeks out Nick Fury to try to piece together parts from her former (human) life, and in the process gets dragged into a fight between the Kree (yes, the same ones from Guardians of the Galaxy) and the human race.

We get to see her in her past life as a human pilot, as well as in her awesome mohawk self from the comics:

Also, Nick Fury has both his eyes and likes cats, which is pretty cute.

Why the hell should you care about this?

She’s the number that Nick Fury called in Avengers: Infinity War, so if you’re going to watch Avengers: Endgame, you might want to watch this to see who saves the day.

3. Game of Thrones Season 8

What is this show about?

Honestly, if you haven’t watched Games of Thrones by now, you probably won’t.

And if you’ve been following, you don’t need my recap.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

This is a teaser trailer, so there’s not much here.

Basically, we see the markers for House Stark and House Targaryen covered in mist (i.e. White Walker time), while House Lannister catches on fire. These two forces barrel towards each other, colliding violently.

Why the hell should you care about this?

I…just really want to know who wins, guys.

Like, we’ve been waiting for YEARS.

4. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: ‘A Midwinter’s Tale’

What is this show about?

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a Netflix show that was ordered after Riverdale became wildly popular when it launched. Both of these shows have characters from the Archie Comics, but the stories don’t follow the happy-go-lucky versions that we know and love; instead, they’re more like Pretty Little Liars, with a ton of murder, deception, and teen angst.

The first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina came out this past October on Netflix, and it starred Kiernan Shipka (from Mad Men) as the titular Sabrina Spellman, trying to decide between her half-mortal, half-witch life.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

This is a special Christmas episode, and it happens after Sabrina has chosen to sign her name in the Book of the Beast (and hence embraced her life as a witch). The trailer shows a series of Christmas scenes, but shot through with dark horror and scares.

Why the hell should you care about this?

I have not actually watched the first season, but I’ve heard that it balances the horror, thriller, and religious aspects in a very smart and cheeky way.

5. Miracle Workers (2019)

What is this show about?

This is a new show premiering on TBS in 2019, and it features Danielle Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi as an angel and God, respectively.

yes, I said God.

What’s the trailer saying, if I can’t be bothered to watch it?

It’s saying to expect Steve Buscemi as an idiosyncratic God, confused by what a typhoon is, while Daniel Radcliffe plays the straight man (or angel), trying to get stuff done.

Why the hell should you care about this?

It looks like a riot, honestly. It’s created by Simon Rich (who also created Man Seeking Woman and was a writer on SNL), and it stars Buscemi and Radcliffe in comedic roles.

I’m so in.

This is a weekly round-up of film and TV trailers. If you’d like to keep up, please feel free to subscribe to One Reel At A Time!
