Have You Ever Cooked Barbecued Steak Like They Did in the 1950s?
It is not my idea of barbecue I can tell you that.
I am on a mission to make as many of the recipes from my Momma’s recipe box as possible. This collection of recipes is frozen in time. With nothing added since 1968, it documents the way food was prepared by a typical Midwestern rural woman during the 1950s and 1960s.
This project speaks to me on an emotional level. Food connects us to our culture and history, but for me, these recipes connect me to a mother I barely knew.
What do I mean by cooking as many of these recipes “as possible”?
Honestly, there are a few of the recipes I just cannot bring myself to eat. Like a hot egg salad foldover. I am not a fan of egg salad anyway, but to make it in a hot pocket?
Nope.
Then there are the hits.
Recipes that despite their age will become permanent dishes in my kitchen repertoire. Like Gingerbread.
